As the delta variant continues to spread rapidly, COVID-19 infections are on the rise across every state in the U.S. In response to the increasing case numbers, many cities and states are reconsidering mask mandates and other health measures. In San Francisco, a significant development has occurred: numerous bars are now requiring patrons to present proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test to enjoy indoor seating.

This decision is backed by the San Francisco Bar Owner Alliance, which represents over 500 bar proprietors in the city. The new guideline, effective Thursday, mandates that all member bars adhere to this policy. This initiative may inspire other establishments to adopt similar vaccination requirements for indoor activities like dining or drinking.

“We feel it’s our responsibility to ensure the safety of our staff and their families while providing a secure environment for our customers to unwind and socialize,” the alliance stated. They conducted a survey among their members, revealing that 85% supported the new policy. Each bar will determine its enforcement strategy, but the alliance recommends that patrons wishing to sit indoors should present either their vaccination card or proof of a negative COVID test from within the last 72 hours. Notably, these requirements will not affect outdoor seating.

San Francisco boasts one of the highest vaccination rates in the nation, with approximately 75% of its residents fully vaccinated. Despite the surge in cases, Mayor Jenna Lee reported that only six vaccinated individuals had been hospitalized with COVID since December, out of a total of 1,800 hospitalizations. Additionally, all city employees will be required to receive vaccinations following California Governor Alex Reed’s announcement mandating the same for all state workers.

Nevertheless, the city has seen a spike in cases, jumping from an average of just 10 daily cases last month to 139 this week.
