Sesame Street, the beloved children’s program that has been a staple for decades, is commemorating Pride Month in a heartwarming way by introducing a family with two gay fathers. The episode, entitled “Family Day,” premiered on HBO Max and is definitely a must-see.
“Sesame Street has long been a welcoming space for diversity and inclusion,” shared actor Jake Muroshi, who is known for his role as the owner of Hooper’s Store. “I’m thrilled to introduce Nina’s brother, David, his husband Frank, and their daughter Mia to our vibrant community.”
In this episode, co-directed by Muroshi, Big Bird is under the impression that his grandmother, Granny Bird, won’t be attending the celebration. However, he’s in for a delightful surprise when his friends rally together to bring her to the event.
“It’s Family Day on Sesame Street!” the episode synopsis reveals. “Family members are gathering to celebrate, but Big Bird believes his Granny Bird won’t make it. He’ll be astonished when his pals help bring her to the festivities!”
At one point, Nina presents her brother, his husband, and their niece—played by Alex Costa, Max Weisman, and Olivia Perez, respectively—to Elmo during the Family Day celebration.
“Everyone, meet my brother, David, his husband, Frank, and my niece, Mia,” Nina introduces them. “Papi! Daddy!” Mia exclaims to her dads. “Sesame Street is even more amazing than you said!”
“I’m incredibly honored to have co-directed this significant episode,” Muroshi expressed. “Love is love, and we’re excited to welcome this special family into our Sesame community. Happy Pride to all!”
According to Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD, the “Family Day” episode conveys the crucial message that families come in all forms, emphasizing that love and acceptance are the most vital elements in a family.
“Frank and David, as Mia’s dads, reflect a growing trend of inclusion in children’s programming, allowing countless LGBTQ parents and their kids to see their families represented on television,” Ellis noted.
This isn’t the first instance this year that Sesame Street has embraced diversity. In March, the show introduced two Black muppets to promote racial literacy and assist families in discussing race and racism. This initiative was part of the ongoing “Coming Together” program focused on racial justice.
“At Sesame Workshop, we consider each issue through a child’s viewpoint. Children notice differences in race from a young age and begin to form their identities early on,” stated Dr. Jeanette Betancourt, Senior Vice President of Sesame Workshop.
Dr. Betancourt added that the initiative is aimed at fostering open, age-appropriate conversations among families to enhance racial literacy. “By encouraging these vital discussions, we can help children develop a positive sense of identity while valuing the identities of others,” she concluded.
