In a heartwarming story from Stafford High School in Falmouth, Virginia, students were in for a delightful surprise when they discovered a special addition in this year’s yearbook. Meet Max, the adorable service dog belonging to junior Jake Thompson.
One of Jake’s classmates, senior Lily Carter, rides the same bus as him and was completely unaware that Max would feature in the yearbook. When she spotted him, she quickly shared a photo on Twitter, which has since garnered thousands of retweets, spreading joy across social media.
Jake, who manages Type 1 diabetes, explained to Buzzfeed News how crucial Max is to his health. “Max alerts me when my blood sugar levels are too low or too high, often sensing changes 20-40 minutes before I do. He has saved my life multiple times by waking me during the night when my levels drop dangerously low,” Jake shared. “Max has truly transformed my condition into a positive part of my life rather than a burden.”
Max has become a familiar face around the school since Jake began bringing him halfway through last year. “This year, he’s with me every day,” Jake said, noting how much of an impact Max has made on the school community.
Realizing Max deserved a spot in the yearbook, Jake approached a friend in the yearbook club for help. “She spoke to the teacher in charge, and they were all on board,” he said. On picture day, Max posed effortlessly, capturing the moment alongside Jake.
Jake still has one year left in high school, and he plans to continue bringing Max along. “He’ll be with me through college and whatever comes next.” However, Jake joked about one high school event he’d attend solo. “He might be in my prom pictures, but he won’t be at prom.”
