A Legacy of Representation

Delgado’s portrayal of Luis, the owner of the Fix-It Shop, began in 1971 and became a significant part of many children’s lives, especially Latinx kids who saw a reflection of themselves in his character. At a time when diverse representation was scarce, Luis provided a non-stereotypical image of a Chicano character. Over the years, he comforted Muppets in distress, repaired various items, and taught children to count in both Spanish and English. His love story with Maria, played by Sonia Manzano, culminated in a memorable rooftop wedding on-air in 1988, followed by the birth of their daughter, Gabi, in 1989.

Early Life and Career

Delgado was born in Calexico, California, in 1940 and spent his childhood in Mexicali, Mexico. His journey in television began in 1968 with Canción de la raza, recognized as the first Mexican-American soap opera. He held the record for the longest-running role of a Mexican-American in a U.S. TV series, playing Luis until 2016. In addition to Sesame Street, he appeared in shows like Hawaii Five-O, Falcon Crest, and House of Cards, and collaborated with the band Pink Martini.

Advocacy and Impact

An advocate for social issues, Delgado supported the United Farm Workers and anti-Vietnam War movements, later serving on the board of the Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice, an LGBTQ+ advocacy group. His contributions were celebrated on social media after his passing, with many expressing gratitude for his representation of Latinx culture. The Bayard Rustin Center stated, “He will be missed but his spirit, energy, & kindness remains with us ‘¡Pa’lante!’”
