Regé-Jean Page, a rising star in Hollywood, has garnered immense popularity since his breakout performance in Netflix’s Bridgerton. However, reports have surfaced suggesting that before his fame, he auditioned for a film role but faced rejection based on his race. According to the LA Times, DC Entertainment declined to cast Page in the Syfy series Krypton, where he had auditioned for the lead role of Superman’s grandfather. The troubling aspect of this situation is the claim that executives believed the character “couldn’t be” portrayed by a Black actor.
Superhero franchises, including those from Marvel and DC, have often been criticized for their lack of diversity and are reportedly striving to incorporate more diverse characters. Yet, this incident highlights the significant progress still needed. DC’s creative officer, Geoffrey Johns, defended his choice, stating he believed audiences expected the character to resemble a young Henry Cavill, who is white and portrays Superman in other DC projects.
The lead role in Krypton, which aired for two seasons from 2018 to 2019, ultimately went to Cameron Cuffe, a white actor. While Page has not publicly addressed the casting controversy, he did tweet, seemingly in reference to the situation, “Hearing about these conversations hurts no less now than it did back then. The clarifications almost hurt more, tbh. Still just doing my thing. Still we do the work. We still fly.”
In addition to facing criticism over racial discrimination, Johns has also been accused of mistreating actors and colleagues in a recent profile in The Hollywood Reporter. This adds to the scrutiny faced by DC, which is already dealing with allegations against Joss Whedon, the director of several DC films, who has been accused of abusive behavior and creating toxic work environments. Ray Fisher, another Black actor within the DC universe, has spoken out against Whedon and criticized DC executives as unfit for leadership.
