Reflections on My Own Sliding Doors Moment

Remember the film Sliding Doors? It follows the journey of Gwyneth Paltrow’s character through two parallel realities: one where she catches her train and another where she misses it. The film explores the themes of chance and fate—while it may not be a cinematic masterpiece, it still resonates with me.

Currently, I find myself in my own version of Sliding Doors. My daughter, Mia, was set to start school yesterday, but due to Hurricane Irene, the school closed its doors on the very first day back from summer break.

Like many parents, I had been eagerly awaiting the start of school—not just for the sake of routine, but because I need to focus on writing a book, which is nearly impossible with the kids at home. Learning about the school’s closure felt like a cruel twist of fate.

While I acknowledge how fortunate we are to be safe and our home mostly unharmed, I can’t help but feel frustrated. Seriously, Baltimore Gas & Electric, enough already!

Imagining a Different Day

Yesterday, I envisioned what my day would have been like had school been in session. I would have dropped Mia off at eight, discovered her teacher’s name, and taken the boys to their orientations. Afterward, I would have tried to encourage them to play together while I squeezed in some writing time. That was the plan.

Instead, we slept in. Instead of making lunches, I snuggled with my sons, Leo and Max. We spent the morning at the zoo with friends rather than attending school events. Instead of discussing classes and sports with other parents, we indulged in my favorite ice cream. We took one of Mia’s friends home, and later, we enjoyed pizza while the kids filled the room with laughter.

It turned out to be a delightful day—one final summer escapade before the school year begins. Perhaps it was even better than the day I had envisioned.

Another Day of Adventures

Unfortunately, school is closed again today, and we will repeat yesterday’s adventures. I must respectfully disagree with fate on this one; I believe the kids should be in school by now. I’m ready for summer to end.

Conclusion

In summary, while unexpected twists can lead to delightful moments, the desire for routine is strong. The journey of parenthood is filled with surprises, and sometimes those surprises are just what we need.
