Reflections on My Journey

This morning, I found myself working out next to a younger version of myself. She was vibrant, fit, and had flawless skin. You know the type I mean. As she effortlessly executed her leg lifts, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of jealousy. “That looks easy,” I thought. Well, not for me right now, since my hip aches from too much time spent lounging, and let’s just say the taco soup I made last night isn’t helping my digestive situation. With kids, I’ve not only dealt with some unexpected leaks, but I’ve also lost a bit of control over my bodily functions. I figured attempting leg lifts while also trying to maintain some dignity was probably a bad idea.

But as quickly as those snarky thoughts entered my mind, they faded away. I smiled to myself, reflecting on how far I’ve come—not just in terms of fitness but also in my mindset. So, I mustered up my courage, got off the floor, and decided to acknowledge her efforts. As she completed what seemed like her hundredth leg lift, I said, “Great form!” She smiled back and complimented me, saying, “You’re really fit for your age.” I burst into laughter—maybe a little too loudly, and who knows what else might have slipped out. She had no clue why I found it so funny.

While I might not be as spry or toned as I once was, I’ve embraced where I am in life. Later that evening, I found myself reflecting on that encounter and the compliment that made me feel surprisingly good about myself. I realized how much I appreciate the journey I’ve been on.

Embracing My 40s

One of the greatest joys of reaching my 40s is the liberating feeling of not caring as much about what others think. Here are a few things I’ve come to love:

  • Indulging in buttercream frosting straight from the bowl.
  • The fact that my husband pointed out I was dangerously close to a blender accident.
  • The familiarity of the staff at my favorite Taco Time drive-thru.
  • Not stressing about my kids’ screen time.
  • Encouraging my kids to stomp on ant hills rather than obsess over homework.
  • No longer feeling the need to buy everything organic.
  • Discarding my daughter’s standardized test scores without a second thought after parent-teacher conferences.
  • Allowing my kids to see my playful side.
  • Finally having the confidence to say, “I don’t care anymore.”
  • Being secure enough to stop comparing my life to others.

This is life in my 40s, and you know what? I think I like it!
