Reflections from a Supportive Community: I’m With Her

As a mother of a Latino child, I recall a moment when another child at school casually stated that if Trump became president, my son would be sent back to Guatemala. This wasn’t said with malice, but rather as if it were a simple fact. Perhaps that makes it even more unsettling. My son, who will soon transition from child to Latino man, often finds himself as the only child of color in his surroundings.

I am also the daughter of a father who passionately supported HRC but sadly passed away this summer before he had the chance to cast his vote. My mother, who ran for local office when I was just a baby, worked tirelessly because she loved her job and instilled in me the belief that I could achieve anything I set my mind to.

As the wife of a husband who took a six-month break from work to care for our son, I admire his dedication. He has attended every birthday party, school meeting, and sporting event over the last decade and now prepares meals for our family every night.

My experiences as a woman have shaped my perspective. I still remember my first “kiss” as an unwanted encounter, being forced down in an empty room. I had to pretend to enjoy it just to escape. In college, I stood up to harassment while advocating for mandatory rape education after a traumatic incident affected a fellow dorm resident.

Today, I cast my vote. I do this for my father, my mother, my husband, my son, and his future. I vote for the girl in my dorm. I vote for our planet. I vote for every one of us. #Imwithher
