As a new day dawns, I find myself inundated with an overwhelming array of tasks. The weight of adult responsibilities hangs in the air: tidy this, sort that, move faster, achieve more. For parents, particularly mothers, the to-do list seems endless. But you know what? I’ve had enough. I refuse to start my day with unrealistic expectations.
From this point forward, I am replacing my to-do list with a to-don’t list…
- I won’t oversleep and sacrifice my quiet moments that I cherish, sipping coffee with a journal beside the window.
- I won’t rush my kids unless there’s a legitimate emergency.
- I won’t utter the words “hurry up,” not even once.
- I won’t waste time mindlessly scrolling through social media for trivial updates from acquaintances.
- I won’t lose my composure or allow anyone to cloud my day with negativity.
- I won’t squander my energy on unkind thoughts about others.
- I won’t fret over cleaning when I could be lying in the grass, watching birds soar, or getting my hands dirty in the garden.
- I won’t criticize my partner, regardless of how late he returns home or how many times he dozes off on the couch.
- I won’t undermine my self-worth by comparing myself to others or stressing over their opinions.
- I won’t feel guilty about what I didn’t accomplish.
- I won’t let a captivating book gather dust on the shelf.
- I won’t turn down a friend’s request for help.
- I won’t question my child’s food choices, whether she eats or doesn’t eat.
- I won’t worry if my daughter forgets her coat.
- I won’t stress over the length of our bedtime routine, no matter how long it stretches.
- I won’t dwell on how many vegetables we skipped this week.
- I won’t be a slave to the clock, obsessing over the agenda.
- I won’t deny myself playful moments, for those are the most precious.
- I won’t chase perfection… nor will I expect it from others.
With a bit of luck, I may finally manage to cross everything off a list—once and for all. Here we go!
