Prince Henry has returned to the UK to attend his grandfather’s funeral, following the passing of the Duke of Edinburgh on April 9 at Windsor Castle at the age of 99. As tributes continue to flow, Prince Henry shared touching sentiments to honor his late grandfather.
In a personal statement, he reflected on Philip’s character, saying, “My grandfather was a man of service, honor, and great humor. He was genuinely himself, equipped with a razor-sharp wit that captivated everyone around him—partly because you never knew what he might say next.”
Henry continued, “He will be remembered as the longest-serving consort to the Monarch, a decorated serviceman, a Prince, and a Duke. But to me, like many who have lost a loved one or grandparent during this difficult year, he was simply Grandpa: master of the grill, a legend at banter, and cheeky to the very end.”
Having arrived in the UK the day before to prepare for the funeral on the 17th, he also mentioned his relationship with the Queen. “He has been a steadfast support for Her Majesty The Queen with unmatched devotion, standing by her side for 73 years of marriage. While I could say much more, I know right now he’d tell us, beer in hand, ‘Oh do get on with it!’”
Philip had faced health challenges in recent years, including hospitalization for an unspecified heart condition earlier this year. Prince Henry’s wife, Megan, could not join him for the funeral as her doctor advised against travel due to her late-stage pregnancy.
In closing, Henry expressed, “So, on that note, Grandpa, thank you for your service, your unwavering dedication to Granny, and for being true to yourself. You will be greatly missed, but always remembered—by the nation and the world. Megan, Archie, and I (along with your future great-granddaughter) will always cherish you in our hearts.”
Prince William’s Tribute
Prince William also shared touching words to honor his grandfather, accompanied by a previously unseen photo of his son, Prince George, riding in a carriage with Philip. “I feel fortunate to have had his example guiding me, and his presence throughout my adult life—through both joyful and challenging times. I will always treasure the memories my children will have of their great-grandpa taking them on carriage rides,” William wrote. “My grandfather was an extraordinary man from an extraordinary generation. Catherine and I will continue to support The Queen in the years to come.”
