Artist Collaborates with TalkSpace to Enhance Access to Mental Health Services

By Jamie Carter, July 16, 2021

The challenge of accessing mental health care has long plagued individuals in the U.S., particularly those who need it the most. In a bid to address this issue, online therapy platform TalkSpace is teaming up with pop sensation Alex Taylor to offer 1,000 months of complimentary therapy through the TalkSpace Access initiative.

Approximately half of all Americans face mental health challenges, and it is estimated that around two-thirds of those with mental illnesses do not receive treatment. The Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated these issues, leading to what TalkSpace describes as “an unprecedented mental health crisis.”

“We are intensifying our commitment to making therapy and mental health resources more accessible to the communities that require it the most,” the company stated, emphasizing its collaboration with various community organizations and non-profits. The Loveland Foundation, a group dedicated to providing therapy services to communities of color, particularly Black women and girls, will be the first recipient of this initiative.

Taylor expressed that reaching underserved communities is a vital goal of the initiative. “Many individuals still struggle to find or afford quality mental health care, especially in communities of color. I’m proud to work with TalkSpace to eliminate these barriers through this project. My aim is to improve access to care and reduce stigma in areas where the need is significant and increasing,” they noted.

For Taylor, this cause holds personal significance. The artist, who recently identified as non-binary, has been candid about their healing journey and therapy experience, especially following a life-altering overdose in 2018. In a previous TalkSpace video, Taylor shared, “Therapy helped me discover my voice and find an inner freedom I’ve sought since childhood.”

Taylor aspires for this initiative to extend similar support to others. “Growing up in the public eye as a child actor and singer, I’ve endeavored to stay true to myself and share my struggles, hoping to offer comfort and inspiration to those who need it. We all face our own battles, so it’s crucial to equip ourselves with the right resources to not just survive but thrive every day,” they concluded.
