Forest protection officials became aware of the reckless gathering when they noticed several primary routes obstructed by partygoers and signs directing people to the event. “Numerous Forest Protection Officers were patrolling Lower Sycamore on Saturday night when a surge of attendees arrived for this unapproved event,” the U.S. Forest Service-Tonto National Forest reported on social media.
The violations noted included driving under the influence, unsafe vehicle operation, and illegal use of fireworks, among others. By the end of the night, the U.S. Forest Service documented seven vehicle accidents and multiple incidents of stolen off-road vehicles. Two ATVs collided, necessitating a helicopter rescue for one individual due to the chaos caused by the gathering.
Scott Garlid from the Arizona Wildlife Federation expressed concern, stating, “While off-roading is supported by our organization and enjoyed by many Arizonans, such a large crowd can harm both fellow enthusiasts and the wildlife.” The campers and participants impeded access by cordoning off parts of the main road for their activities.
Despite the serious violations, no citations or arrests were reported, although eight deputies were dispatched to the scene. “There were many tickets issued for riding double on ATVs and for children not wearing helmets,” noted Laura Jensen with Tonto National Forest.
The party took place in the Lower Sycamore Creek area, and Sandy Parker from the Grand Canyon Chapter of the Sierra Club found the situation alarming. “The environmental impact of such a large crowd engaging in these activities is going to be extremely destructive,” Parker remarked.
The U.S. Forest Service emphasized that gatherings of over 75 people require an approved permit. “Don’t contribute to the problem,” the organization urged. “Report unauthorized social media events to our district offices.”
