Op-Ed: Declining the COVID-19 Vaccine? You’re Out

I reached out to every mom I knew in similar situations, sharing the good news that they too qualified for vaccination. To my surprise, one mom responded with, “Oh, we’re not interested in that,” followed by a laughing emoji. My heart sank. This was someone I respected, yet she was dismissing a vaccine that has the potential to save countless lives and protect vulnerable populations.

Another close friend, who I admire for her strength and kindness, also declined the vaccine. I couldn’t hold back my tears.

Yes, I’m calling them out. Cancel culture may be frowned upon, but this is a warning. If you are my friend and choose to refuse a COVID-19 vaccine, I can no longer consider you a part of my life. We can exchange pleasantries, but that’s where it ends. Our kids won’t have playdates, and I won’t reach out to you. Feel free to unfriend me, but know that I will do the same.

I’ve watched others disregard quarantine guidelines, hosting gatherings while the pandemic raged on. I’ve seen my own kids suffer emotionally from isolation while others flaunted safety measures. It was heartbreaking to see my son distance himself from a friend who he felt wasn’t taking the virus seriously.

The only exception to my stance would be for those with legitimate medical reasons preventing them from getting vaccinated. However, doubts about the vaccine’s safety do not constitute a valid excuse. Numerous reputable sources, including the CDC, have reported that severe reactions to the COVID-19 vaccine are exceedingly rare.

When individuals refuse the vaccine, they are not just making a personal choice; they are endangering lives—real, tangible lives. This is especially true for marginalized communities, where COVID-19 has had a disproportionate impact.

Vaccination is crucial in slowing the pandemic. Each dose administered saves lives, particularly for those who are unable to protect themselves. My own family has been deeply affected by this virus, and every refusal feels like a personal affront to our struggles.

If you are hesitant about the COVID-19 vaccine, you are likely misinformed and perpetuating privilege at the expense of the vulnerable. You are prolonging a public health crisis, and I cannot stand by and accept that.

After nearly a year of isolation, COVID-19 has taken its toll on me, and it seems it will also take some friendships along the way.
