If you’ve ever wished your favorite artists would create music suitable for your little ones, you’re in for a treat. Former boy band sensation, Jason Lee, is set to release an album titled Which One Am I?, inspired by his own childhood experiences.

We caught up with Jason before he embarked on a European tour to discuss the motivation behind Which One Am I? and how fatherhood is influencing his new musical direction.

The Lead Single: “No Hablo Español”

The album’s lead single, “No Hablo Español,” delves into the challenges he faced as a young child. Raised in a multicultural home—his mother is Hispanic and his father is Caucasian—Jason shares that the song “captures the struggle of growing up in America while also being part of a minority.” Like many kids from his generation, he didn’t speak much Spanish, which made him feel out of place among his peers in Orlando, Florida. “The first phrase I learned was ‘No hablo español,’” he recalls.

At the time of our conversation, Jason had not yet filmed the music video for “No Hablo Español,” but he hinted at some exciting guest appearances. Now that the video is complete, we know that his son, Lucas, portrays a younger version of Jason, while his mother, Maria, takes on the role of “abuelita,” a part she knows well.

Family Bonding Through Music

Although Jason didn’t explicitly state that Lucas would be the video’s star, it’s no surprise. During our chat, he noted that Lucas appears to be following in his father’s musical footsteps, taking singing lessons with Jason’s sister and even running his own YouTube channel to showcase his performances. “He’s a little character,” Jason jokes.

With Jason’s busy touring schedule (the band is in Europe before heading to the U.S. this summer), including Lucas in the video is a meaningful way for them to bond. Jason emphasizes that being a dad is his top priority. He credits his wife for managing everything while he’s away, but when he’s home, he’s fully engaged. “I’m the one driving the kids around and helping with their homework. When I’m off, I put on a different hat.”

He often shares his creative work with his sons (he also has a younger child named Max), using their feedback as inspiration. “I’d play them the songs in the car, and they absorb it so quickly,” he mentions about the songwriting process. “They listen to it once or twice, and they’ve got it down.”

Creating Enjoyable Music for All

Making Which One Am I? enjoyable for both children and parents was crucial for Jason. He understands the challenge parents face when their kids fall in love with a song or movie, often leading to endless repetition. “I wanted to create something that kids and parents could enjoy together,” he explains. Despite being aimed at children, the album will have universal appeal, making it a fun experience for everyone.

What’s more, this approach resonates with many former Backstreet Boys fans, who are now parents themselves. Sharing an artist they grew up with alongside their kids creates a special connection.

Upcoming Themes and Insights

While we eagerly await the album’s release in July, Jason shared that other song themes will include living in the shadow of an older sibling (“Pollyanna’s Shadow”), grappling with height insecurities (“Small Time Blues”), and facing childhood fears (“Monsters in My Head”).
