Nurturing My Daughter’s Inner Fashionista: A Confidence Boost for Us Both

The color schemes of my childhood outfits could have easily inspired a modern art exhibit. I owe my unique sense of style to my parents, who had complete control over my wardrobe until I turned 7 and decided to take matters into my own hands.

Recently, I stumbled upon a photo from when I was just 4 years old. I was dressed in wide-wale, navy blue corduroys, a banana yellow shirt with cowboy motifs, and a dark blue cardigan adorned with red and orange vertical stitching. Clearly, my parents were indulging their creative fashion whims through my attire. At least, that’s how I viewed it back then.

Now, as the father of two—my eldest daughter being 5 and my newborn is nearby—I’ve come to understand what my parents realized long ago: it’s my prerogative as a parent to dress my child however I please. Typically, my wife selects our daughter’s outfits, but occasionally, it’s my turn to choose. Admittedly, I’m no fashion guru; in fact, I wouldn’t even classify myself as a Maxxinista. More accurately, I’m a JCPenney-irregular-collection-inista. Yet, what I lack in style, I compensate for with creativity.

Throughout the school year, I’ve curated imaginative outfits that have turned heads among her preschool peers. One standout ensemble featured leopard-print tights, a tiger graphic tee, a fluffy white vest, bold bracelets, and round purple sunglasses. To complete the look, I draped a whimsical necklace with a large key around her neck.

Why a key, you ask? It symbolizes unlocking the potential to embrace her individuality and express herself without concern for judgment. After all, it’s my daughter’s self-confidence that matters most—at least in relation to her father’s choices.

So, why does a dad who favors worn-out t-shirts dress his daughter like she’s auditioning for a fashion competition? The answer is simple: because I can. But it’s more profound than that. I’ve come to realize my parents weren’t just dressing me in outlandish outfits for their amusement.

Every time we assemble her outfits, my daughter lights up as she admires her reflection, walking to school with her head held high and a beaming smile. This experience has not only taught her to be fearless, but it has also reminded me of the importance of boldness in life.

I understand that this phase won’t last forever. Eventually, my daughter will develop her own tastes and may not seek my input on her fashion choices. For now, she’s my little model, and I’m her version of a male Betsey Johnson. Just wait until she sees the kindergarten collection I have planned!

In the future, when she looks back at these photographs, she might just thank (or blame) me for helping her stand out.
