The latest trailers for In the Heights highlight Lin-Manuel Miranda’s brilliance as he transitions his Broadway success to the big screen.
To amp up our anticipation for In the Heights, all you need to know is this: Lin-Manuel Miranda and Anthony Ramos. Miranda, the mastermind behind Hamilton, and Ramos, who starred in it and was recently named one of Time magazine’s Next 100, make an unstoppable pair. They’re bringing us another award-winning musical that we can enjoy on the big screen or from the comfort of our homes. Count us in!
If that wasn’t enough to get us hyped for In the Heights, a brand new full-length trailer has just dropped. And folks, it’s packed with Latinx culture and infectious music that will have you dancing in your chair, even if Daylight Saving Time has you hitting snooze this morning. Be sure to check it out.
Miranda, always looking out for us, has provided us with yet another trailer.
In the film, Ramos portrays Usnavi, a bodega owner in the vibrant Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City, who dreams of success and a better life for those he cares about. This musical, which earned Miranda his first Tony Awards and skyrocketed him to fame long before Hamilton, follows Usnavi and his community as they chase the American Dream in their predominantly Dominican neighborhood. Previous trailers have revealed that Miranda has made some adjustments to the original script, incorporating stories of immigration challenges that have been prevalent in recent headlines.
Miranda, who originated the role of Usnavi on stage, will also appear in the film as Piraguero, the operator of a small piragua stand. “This is a big movie musical,” Miranda shared during a virtual event prior to the trailer’s release. “We’ve been conditioned to ask for less, just to occupy space. As Latinos, we often say, ‘Please just let us tell our story.’ But Jon was adamant that this is a big movie.” He emphasized that these characters have grand ambitions, and they deserve to be represented on a grand scale.
Adding to our excitement, In the Heights is directed by Jon Chu, known for Crazy Rich Asians. Chu has previously mentioned that he was drawn to this project because of its focus on immigrant families and their profound connections with one another. “You can’t change the world if people aren’t willing to change, but never underestimate the power of planting a seed,” Chu stated. “I believe that this film is a beautifully powerful seed that can inspire change.”
In the Heights is set to premiere on June 18, available in theaters and streaming on HBO Max.
