A recent study reveals that new parents are likely to consult Google more than 2,000 times during their infant’s first year. The survey, conducted by OnePoll for a parenting brand, found that the average parent searches for information on various topics nearly nine times a day. With 2,000 parents of children under two participating, the findings indicate that parents frequently worry about their little ones, turning to the internet for guidance six times daily. Notably, 62% of respondents stated they often think about the long-term effects of their parenting choices.
The survey also highlights the time commitment of new parents, noting that they typically spend over 1,600 hours holding their newborns, endure 77 sleepless nights, and make approximately 56 phone calls to their own parents and 67 to healthcare professionals in that first year. The most common online inquiries included topics like skin conditions and recommended infant products (both at 43%), followed closely by feeding questions (40%), reasons for crying (38%), and sleep issues (37%). A significant 71% of parents expressed that they would have felt lost without the accessibility of parenting resources.
Interestingly, despite the challenges, nearly two-thirds of those surveyed view parenthood as one of their most significant achievements. Parents also shared their favorite moments, such as applying lotion to their baby’s skin (42%), holding them (39%), feeding (38%), and conversing with them (38%). The cherished “firsts” included their baby’s first smile or laugh (36%) and playtime with toys (34%).
Reflecting on their early days, 47% of parents wished they could have reassured their past selves that they were doing well, even when they felt overwhelmed. About 46% would remind themselves that it’s perfectly okay not to have all the answers when caring for a newborn. Remember, Googling for advice is common—most parents do it six times a day!
