In a recent global survey, it was revealed that approximately one in five young adults identifies as non-heterosexual or non-cisgender, highlighting a significant trend of gender and sexual fluidity among Generation Z. This finding coincides with the upcoming Pride Month celebrations.
Nicolas Boyon, a senior vice president at Ipsos, stated, “It’s a global phenomenon,” as the survey suggests that younger adults are increasingly comfortable identifying outside traditional norms. The LGBT+ Pride 2021 Global Survey, released by the research firm Ipsos, indicates that 4% of Gen Z members (born since 1997) identify as “transgender, non-binary, non-conforming, gender-fluid, or other than male or female,” a notable increase compared to 2% of Millennials, 1% of Gen X, and under 1% of Baby Boomers.
The survey also revealed that younger adults are not only more likely to identify as non-heterosexual but also express attraction to multiple genders. About 9% of respondents identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, omnisexual, or asexual, with this figure surging to 18% among Gen Z participants.
Conducted between April 23 and May 7, the survey sampled over 19,000 individuals aged 16 to 74 across 27 countries. It also examined the respondents’ exposure to and engagement with the LGBT+ community globally. For instance, in the U.S., 57% reported knowing someone who identifies as gay or lesbian, while that figure was even higher in Brazil at 66%. Conversely, Japan and South Korea reported significantly lower percentages at around 7%.
Country-specific data shows that 2.9% of respondents in Sweden identified as gender minorities, followed by Germany at 2.5% and Argentina at 2.3%. India had a notable 17% identifying as non-heterosexual, with Brazil at 15% and Spain at 12%.
Boyon emphasized that the trends observed in the U.S. are mirrored in other countries as well. The survey explored various issues, including perspectives on equality, anti-discrimination laws, adoption rights, and marriage equality.
Alphonso David, President of the Human Rights Campaign, remarked, “Transgender, non-binary, and gender-expansive people, as well as bi+ people, have existed across time and cultures for centuries — yet they may not always be seen.” He stressed that the identities of LGBTQ+ individuals are neither fads nor phases, urging a celebration of these communities that face ongoing challenges and oppression, particularly during Pride Month and beyond.
