Navigating the Challenges of Motherhood

Sometimes, being a mother can feel overwhelming. There are days when I run the vacuum cleaner simply to encourage my kids to retreat to their rooms and play. Other times, I find myself sneaking York Peppermint Patties in the kitchen, despite claiming they were all gone. Occasionally, I skip bath nights—maybe two or three in a row. There are moments when I cover my mouth, silently mouthing curse words in frustration. I might say, “Sure, I’ll join you in a game of Superhero Squadron,” but then I conveniently forget.

Sometimes, I drive to a Chick-fil-A that’s further away just to extend nap time once we return home. I tell you I’m not looking because I’m using “Mom Vision.” I might even tell your dad I need a moment alone in the bathroom, when in reality, I’m just hiding. I promise to watch a show with you, but often, I fall asleep instead. If I have to pretend to eat one more cookie from your imaginary kitchen, I might genuinely feel sick. I say, “One minute!” but end up taking twenty. Occasionally, I feign ignorance about the whereabouts of your favorite CDs. There are times I raise my voice when a polite request would suffice.

Yet, amidst the chaos, there are countless joyful moments. Sometimes, we play school, and I genuinely enjoy it. I find pure delight watching you both ride your bikes, laughing as you zoom past. There are nature walks where we collect fascinating pinecones, and you help me prepare dinner, which turns out surprisingly well. I often want to join you in a dance when you play music together. Playing Simon Says brings out my laughter, and running errands can feel like an outing with friends. I love catching glimpses of you during our dinner blessings, and singing loudly in the car with you is a spontaneous joy.

Sometimes I’m happy, sometimes I’m irritable. The journey of being your mom can be tough at times, but there are also moments that are effortless. Regardless of the challenges, my love for you is unwavering.
