Navigating Parenting with a Hangover: Considering a Shift to Cannabis

As a parent, the overwhelming responsibilities can drive anyone to seek relief, whether it comes from alcohol, marijuana, or perhaps even a boarding school—though I haven’t gone that route (yet). Parenting is tough, and sometimes you need a break from the daily grind.

In my earlier days, I dabbled in more than just drinking. Now, with the changing tides around marijuana legality and the stigma dissipating, I find myself contemplating a return to the soothing embrace of cannabis.

Every election brings news of states legalizing marijuana for medical or recreational use. It’s clear that, barring any major political upheaval, marijuana will soon be seen as a normal part of life, much like my kids will likely experience in their own parenting journeys.

I have a fondness for beer and bourbon, and as a father, my drinking habits have evolved—often becoming more intentional. However, as I transitioned into my 40s, I’ve noticed that the hangovers have become increasingly brutal.

This brings us back to the idea of cannabis. There are numerous reasons a parent might consider this herbal alternative. With two kids, I’ve compiled a list of advantages to smoking pot while parenting:

  • No hangover
  • No hangover
  • No hangover (I could keep going, but you get the point)
  • TV shows like Yo Gabba Gabba! become significantly more enjoyable
  • Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is also a blast
  • Even Scooby-Doo takes on a new charm—except for Caillou, who is universally unbearable
  • A newfound ability to appreciate your kids’ silly questions (and even find them funny)
  • Play-Doh? A fantastic adventure!
  • Stress? What stress?
  • Dinner time? Surprisingly calm
  • Bedtime? Remarkably peaceful
  • House chores? An experience like no other
  • Grocery shopping? Probably best left for sober moments
  • Musical instruments? They’ll appreciate twirling
  • And let’s not forget, marijuana is anti-nausea, making the dreaded Diaper Genie much easier to handle
  • No hangover (I promise, this really matters!)

While the benefits of parenting while high may seem appealing (cough no hangover cough), I recognize that my anxious nature might make me paranoid in this state. I might forget that my 6-year-old has been in time-out for hours or become overly concerned about imaginary dangers.

Of course, I could provide countless disclaimers, but it’s safe to say that you understand this is all meant with humor in mind. In summary, while the idea of smoking pot as a parent has its attractions, one must weigh the potential downsides. Humor can be a vital tool for coping with the chaos of parenthood, and sometimes, finding that balance is key to enjoying the ride.
