In this snapshot, on the left, you can see my little one enjoying a Fruit Roll-Up in the produce section, and on the right, she’s happily munching on a cookie from the bakery.

Here’s my game plan for Saturday shopping trips: I take my adorable tornado of energy to the store, and we always grab the pink car cart — no substitutes allowed! The black or blue carts? Forget it.

As we meander past the apples, I spot a display of Fruit Roll-Ups. I hand one over to my toddler, and I have a limited window to finish my shopping before the treat is gone. If she manages to devour it before we reach the bakery (where they hand out free cookies), I’m in for a meltdown that could rival a scene from a horror movie.

Luckily, this trick usually does the trick. If you’ve ever shopped with toddlers, you know these odds are in my favor. I’m not sure when this system became my norm, but it certainly does the job.

Now, I can already hear someone — perhaps a well-meaning parent — ready to offer their sage advice on how to maintain order without resorting to the Fruit Roll-Up and cookie bribes. If that’s you, please move along; this isn’t for you.

This is for the parents who have their own quirky methods to make grocery shopping less of a headache. It’s for those who know that a little planning can go a long way.

We all know kids thrive on routine and love a good treat. So if a pink car cart and a sticky toddler with cookie crumbs in their hair is the price for a peaceful shopping experience, then so be it. Because at the end of the day, you’ve managed to complete another shopping trip, and that makes you a true champion.
