Recent research conducted by scientists at the University of Texas Health Science Center indicates that children and adolescents who have previously contracted COVID-19 can develop natural antibodies that may last for several months. Beginning in October 2020, the study analyzed blood samples taken from 218 participants aged 5 to 19 over three intervals, each spaced a few months apart. These individuals were part of the Texas Coronavirus Antibody REsponse Survey (CARES), which was initiated prior to the vaccine rollout. Out of the 218 subjects, 75 (or 34.4%) tested positive for antibodies in their first sample. By the second sample, two of these 75 showed a decrease in antibody levels. Notably, 96% of those with antibodies in the second sample maintained their natural antibodies by the third testing.

“These results are significant because they reveal that the data collected from children infected with COVID-19 was consistent, regardless of symptom severity, timing of infection, weight status, or gender,” explained Dr. Emily Hart, the lead author of the study and an epidemiology expert at UTHealth School of Public Health in Dallas.

However, the study also revealed that 58% of the samples were negative for antibodies at the final measurement. This underscores the importance of vaccination as a critical measure of protection against the virus, even for those who have had a prior infection. “Research in adults indicates that the combination of natural infection and vaccine-induced immunity provides the strongest defense against COVID-19. Some parents may mistakenly believe their child is fully protected after having COVID-19 and therefore forgo vaccination,” Hart cautioned. “While our study is promising in showing that some natural antibodies can last for at least six months in children, we still lack clarity on the level of immunity needed for full protection. Vaccination remains an essential tool to provide extra protection, so if your child is eligible, it’s important to get them vaccinated.”

To date, approximately 14 million children in the United States have tested positive for COVID-19.

Summary:

A study from the University of Texas reveals that natural antibodies from COVID-19 infections can last for several months in children and teens. While many maintain antibody levels, vaccination remains crucial, as a significant portion of samples were negative for antibodies later on. Experts emphasize the importance of getting vaccinated to enhance protection against the virus.
