Halloween used to be a big deal for me. Back in the days when my kids were in elementary school, I embraced the spirit wholeheartedly, dressing up for their classroom celebrations. One memorable year, I transformed into Medusa, complete with an extravagant rubber snake wig. Another time, I donned the classic witch attire, green makeup and all, while cackling like a pro. I even went all out as a clown, complete with Bozo paint, oversized red shoes, and a vibrant rainbow wig.
Let’s not forget the kids’ costumes! With four enthusiastic little models at my disposal, I became the Midwestern equivalent of Tim Gunn, assessing our costume creations with a critical eye and muttering, “We need more gauze!” as I encouraged myself to make it work.
As they grew older, however, my chances to dress up dwindled. I found myself relegated to handing out candy while wearing uninspired Halloween-themed shirts. I longed for the days of researching and assembling costumes, as well as the joy of embarrassing my children.
So, when I received invites to a few adult-only Halloween parties last year—one featuring an actual costume contest—I was filled with excitement. The thrill of Halloween returned as ideas raced through my mind. Should I go as Megan from Bridesmaids? Or maybe take a trip down memory lane with Mary Katherine Gallagher from Superstar? Perhaps a politically-themed costume, like Michele Bachmann or Sarah Palin?
As the days passed and the parties approached, I was still struggling for the perfect idea. That’s when a friend, Lisa, and I exchanged texts about costume concepts. She’s incredibly creative, so I knew she’d have some gems. Then, out of nowhere, I received the message: “Why not go as a BOX OF WINE?”
I laughed at first but quickly Googled “Box of Wine Costume.” To my surprise, I found a few homemade versions, primarily featuring Franzia. The idea was both amusing and intriguing. I decided to go with a Bota Box instead, since I practically supported that brand with my purchases. Not only is their wine enjoyable, but the packaging is stylish with its muted tones and chic fonts.
Creating Your Own Box of Wine Costume
If you’re thinking about creating your own Box of Wine costume, I recommend starting about a week in advance. Lisa and I put ours together in just over an hour. Here’s what you’ll need:
- A large cardboard box that fits comfortably over your body (I used a box that originally held a toilet).
- A roll of brown craft paper—don’t worry about the specifics; just grab a roll from Michael’s.
- Plenty of clear packing tape.
- Duct tape of any color (it’s for inside the box).
- An abundance of markers, especially thick Sharpies. We went through several black ones while replicating the Bota Box design.
- Heavy-duty scissors.
- A real box of wine, complete with wine inside. This is essential for copying the design and for using during the festivities.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step One: Cut holes in the box for your head and arms. This is straightforward but can be time-consuming, so start early.
Step Two: Once your holes are cut, try the box on for size. You’ll likely find sitting is difficult, so avoid uncomfortable shoes, and keep it casual. You may need help getting food and drinks, so be prepared.
Step Three: The most crucial hole is for the spout! You’ll need to serve wine from your costume. The spigot is usually on the side of a Bota Box, but we moved it to the front for convenience.
Step Four: Wrap the box in craft paper like a gift, securing it with tape, but leave the front and sides clear for decorating.
Step Five: Now for the fun part! Replicate the box design as closely as possible. My friend is a talented artist, and her skills made our costume look authentic.
Step Six: Once the decorating is complete, it’s time to install the wine. Remove the pouch from the actual wine box, and make adjustments if needed to lighten it.
Step Seven: Get inside the costume and position the spigot correctly. Tape the wine pouch securely to the inside of the box to prevent any spills.
After all that, ensure your costume is functional before heading out. You’ll need space to transport it, and if you’ve enjoyed some wine during the process, please don’t drive.
The best part of this costume? Comfort! I’m so tired of women’s costumes being just the “sexy” version of everything. Honestly, what’s more appealing than being cozy and having wine on tap?
