My Son Inspires a Kindness Challenge

“Mom, why can’t everyone be kind?”

This heartfelt question arose unexpectedly during my son’s routine dental check-up. While our lives are enriched by wonderful people, we inevitably encounter those whose words can inflict pain. Public outings often leave us uncertain about the kindness we might face.

At the dental office, we are fortunate to be surrounded by dedicated professionals who make it their mission to accommodate individuals on the autism spectrum. However, I wasn’t prepared for the extraordinary experience that awaited us that day.

Shortly after our arrival, a warm, grandmotherly figure named Linda approached us in the waiting area. With a bright smile, she introduced herself and asked if she could engage my son in conversation. I nodded, slightly taken aback, and watched in amazement as Linda effortlessly drew my son out of his shell.

Ignoring his fidgeting movements, she posed thoughtful questions about his interests—his favorite video games, recent Lego creations, and even his opinion on the best Marvel superhero. I instinctively reached to give him our calming shoulder-pat signal, but Linda gently stopped me, assuring me that it was wonderful to see him so engaged.

After some time, she informed my son that it was time for his cleaning. As he eagerly walked away, Linda leaned in close and whispered, “It’s okay. My grandson has autism too. Aren’t they the sweetest kids?” She then smiled again, patted my shoulder, and joined my son.

On our ride home, my son asked, “Mom, why can’t everyone be kind?” The kindness shown to him by a stranger left such an impression that he urged me to spread the message that everyone deserves compassion and understanding.

What if we all made a commitment to actively demonstrate kindness and grace to others? What if we used our own experiences to uplift those around us? What if we chose to be “that” person who offers hope to someone struggling or extends love to those who may not reciprocate?

Imagine the impact if we routinely shared encouraging words, smiled at strangers, or lent a hand to someone in need—whether it’s a mom dealing with a child’s meltdown or a person on crutches. It’s essential to be intentional about kindness.

We have all faced unkindness, whether intentional or born of ignorance, but we also know the healing power of kindness and grace. Those moments can provide comfort to wounds we didn’t even realize were there.

I understand that those of us grappling with challenges—be it our own struggles or caring for others with disabilities—often feel depleted. Yet, if we pause to recall how it felt when someone showed us kindness, we might tap into a reservoir of strength we never knew we had.

My son invites you to take on the kindness challenge, reminding us that every individual matters. I am accepting his challenge. Will you join us?
