My Son Faces Bullying, But We Won’t Let the Bullies Succeed

When you cradle your precious little one, you envision a world filled with love and endless possibilities. In those tender moments, you never imagine that someone would dislike or mistreat them. But when that harsh reality strikes, it shatters a parent’s heart. I know this pain firsthand.

My son has endured bullying since he was 10. It all began because of his intelligence. He was eager to participate in class, often raising his hand too often and drawing attention to himself. While teachers appreciated his enthusiasm, other kids labeled him a nerd. Initially, it started with mild teasing and mocking sounds as he passed by, but it escalated as he grew older.

Teachers intervened, gathering the boys and urging them to stop. They threatened meetings with parents if the bullying continued, but this was an empty threat. The parents seemed oblivious, believing their children could do no wrong. For instance, when one boy kicked a girl, his mother claimed her daughter must have instigated it. It’s disheartening to see such a lack of accountability.

At the end of the school year, we relocated, and I felt relieved to close that chapter. However, one evening, the phone rang: a group FaceTime call from those same boys. They called 28 times before he picked up. Initially, one boy apologized, and my son accepted it gratefully. But soon, their laughter turned cruel. They hurled insults and used a nickname that infuriated him. My son lashed out, and while I typically wouldn’t endorse such language, I felt the same frustration.

With tears in his eyes, he asked, “Why are they so cruel to me? I despise them!” I had no answer. These boys didn’t understand that he is loved deeply by his family. Their meanness was unjustified, and he wasn’t foolish; he was well aware of their intentions. Their actions hurt him, and they hurt me too.

I was furious and wanted to reach out to their parents to express my feelings, but my son pleaded with me not to. “Please don’t! It will only make things worse. I just want to forget it.” But how could we forget? I would have to act normal when I saw their mothers at the store, asking about their lives while suppressing my true feelings.

I wish their parents could feel the same anguish I do. Maybe then, they would teach their children empathy. I wonder how they would react if their child faced isolation at the lunch table or if they were mocked for something beyond their control. Would they just stand by as their child cried, feeling powerless? No parent should have to endure such pain.

A parent’s love for their child is unparalleled. It runs deeper than any other love. When a child is hurt, it wounds the parent profoundly. When my son turns to me, seeking a solution I can’t provide, it’s devastating.

So what can I do? I listen, I show love, and I strategize. I refuse to let him internalize negativity from a few unkind peers. He is intelligent, kind, and deserving of happiness and self-worth, and I will not allow anyone to take that away from him.

As a parent, my heart aches for both my son and every child facing similar cruelty. I strive to teach my children the importance of kindness. A simple act of compassion can brighten someone’s day. I will instill in them the value of treating everyone with respect, regardless of how they are treated in return.

Kindness will always be essential. Cruelty exists throughout life, whether in the workplace or elsewhere, and that’s acceptable. But stealing someone’s joy is never acceptable. My son will shine brightly, and I promise we won’t let a handful of mean kids prevail. He deserves so much more.
