My Most Memorable Moment as a Parent

As I watched my 4-year-old daughter, Lily, stacking her colorful blocks, I couldn’t help but smile at her determination. But then, out of nowhere, she mutters a word that made my heart drop: “Damn it!”

I froze, horrified. “Where did you hear that?” I asked, my voice laced with concern. Was it from school? A friend? The playground? The TV? Or maybe her dad?

“Nope,” she replied, her big eyes looking up at me innocently. “I heard it from you.”

In that moment of shock, I realized I needed to address this. “That’s a really bad word, honey. I shouldn’t say it, and neither should you.”

“Okay, Mommy,” she said thoughtfully. “But can I just say darn it?”

Well, at least it’s a step in the right direction, I thought. Parenting can be full of unexpected surprises, and sometimes those surprises come from within our own home.
