My First “This Hurts Me More Than It Hurts You” Experience

Recently, I took my 3-year-old daughter, Lily, on a shopping trip. I needed some new clothes, and I thought it would be a delightful opportunity for some mother-daughter bonding. She was thrilled, transforming one of my least favorite errands into something enjoyable.

With my arms full of potential outfits, we made our way to the children’s section so she could pick out a few items as well. My goal is to nurture her independence and encourage her to express her opinions. This seemed like a perfect way to start instilling those qualities in her. She eagerly examined various options and finally settled on two dresses and a skirt.

We headed to the fitting rooms, and both of us began trying on our selections. After each dress she tried, she would twirl and gaze at her reflection, asking for my thoughts. I complimented every piece, but reminded her she could only choose one to take home. After some deliberation, she picked a pink dress with criss-cross straps and a skirt designed for twirling. As we waited to pay, she excitedly declared it her new dancing dress that she intended to wear forever.

Unfortunately, “forever” was shorter than we anticipated.

Upon returning home, she put on the dress and spent the day dancing and twirling, repeatedly asking her dad and brother for their opinions. Convincing her to change into pajamas took some serious negotiation. The next morning, she was back in the dress only moments after waking up.

It was her sheer excitement that signaled something was off. After some time playing in her room, she emerged without the dress.

“Why aren’t you dressed?” I inquired.

She offered a guilty smile and the smell hit me—nail polish.

I rushed to her room to discover a mini-catastrophe. Nail polish was smeared across several books, a dried puddle marked the carpet, and her beloved dress was a mess of vibrant color.

Her consequence unfolded in three parts. First, she faced the wall while I calmed down and searched online for solutions to remove nail polish from carpet (Windex, who knew?). Next, she had to silently watch as I scrubbed the carpet clean. Finally, she had to dispose of her dress.

“Sweetheart, because you used the nail polish without permission, made a mess, and didn’t tell me, your punishment is to throw your dress in the trash.”

Her expression fell; her lip trembled, and tears brimmed in her eyes, mirroring my own.

“But I love that dress. We just got it yesterday,” she protested.

“I love it too, darling, but you know you made some poor choices, and at your age, you need to face real consequences.”

After more discussion, she reluctantly took her dress to the trash and dropped it in. Soon, she seemed to forget the incident.

But I didn’t.

All afternoon, my heart ached. I loved that dress, not just for its color but for what it represented—a joyful day spent together, fostering her individuality. It signified a moment without power struggles or tantrums. Now, all of that was shattered, marking my first true “this hurts me more than it hurts you” moment in parenting.

It hurt to see her sadness. It hurt to impose such personal discipline. I was tempted to retrieve the dress from the trash. After all, it could be a play dress at home. However, I knew I had to be firm. What hurt most was the realization that I had to uphold the punishment I had given. If I backed down, she wouldn’t learn, and neither would I.

Every parent faces this moment. At some point, we must enforce real consequences for our children’s actions, regardless of how painful it may be for both parties. These lessons are crucial for teaching them about life, choices, and their repercussions—concepts you don’t fully grasp when reading parenting books. It’s a challenging and emotional journey, but it ultimately shapes our children into respectful individuals, which is what we all aspire for them.

“I really miss that pink dress, Mom,” she occasionally says.

“Me too, sweetheart. Me too.”
