My Child Is A Rule-Breaker, But Perhaps That’s a Positive Trait

As a new parent, I found myself utterly disenchanted with the Mommy and Me classes. It wasn’t the overly enthusiastic instructor or the silly activities that annoyed me. No, it was the dreaded circle time that sent me over the edge, ultimately earning us the title of “Mommy and Me Dropouts.”

Circle time felt like a personal torment. It left me questioning everything about my parenting, making me wonder what I was doing wrong. While the other children sat contentedly on their parents’ laps singing and clapping, my son was a whirlwind of energy, darting around the gymnasium. No matter how many times I reiterated that he should remain seated, his desire to explore and climb overshadowed any rules. Circle time rules? He had no interest in those.

Fast forward a decade—my once free-spirited toddler still strides confidently to his own beat, with his younger brother following suit. They challenge boundaries and often disregard rules, seeking loopholes at every turn. A fence, to them, isn’t a barrier; it’s an invitation to find a way over it. And while this behavior drives me to distraction, I’ve begun to reconsider whether their rule-bending tendencies might actually be beneficial.

Recently, during a family trip to Yosemite, my son discovered that grizzly bears are endangered and extinct in California. He immediately began brainstorming ways to protect and reintroduce these magnificent creatures. “What if we did this?” he asked. “Why can’t they try that?” His ideas, while sometimes impractical, sparked a thought in me.

As I watched him and his brother eagerly explore the wilderness without a backward glance, it dawned on me that their fearless approach could lead to significant discoveries in the future. The innovators and rebels are often the ones who effect change. Rather than accepting limits, they challenge them, asking “Why not?” and forging new paths.

In fact, many remarkable inventions and ideas are born from those willing to take risks and think outside the box. They step away from the conventional, which can lead to both failures and extraordinary successes.

That day in the great outdoors, witnessing my sons venture into the unknown without hesitation reminded me of the importance of embracing that spirit. Perhaps, instead of constantly saying “no” or “be careful,” I should learn from their adventurous natures. As a cautious rule-follower, I could use a dose of their daring attitude.

While my spirited children often test my patience and leave me feeling overwhelmed, I also see glimpses of their potential—opportunities for adventure, growth, and confidence. And the more I ponder it, the more I realize that I desire those same experiences for myself.

In conclusion, embracing the rule-breaking tendencies of my children might just be the key to unlocking a world of possibilities—for them and for me.
