Who can resist pizza? Even though I’m lactose intolerant, I occasionally indulge with a Lactaid, ready to face the aftermath for a slice. But when a real pizza isn’t available, there’s a world of snacks inspired by our favorite dish. My adventurous partner-in-snacking—my 11-year-old son—and I dove into a mix of classic and new pizza snacks. Here’s our honest take on these treats that bear a resemblance to pizza in some way.
Totino’s Pizza Rolls
These are the ultimate pizza-inspired snack. The packaging boasts “New! Air-Fryability.” Since I don’t have an air fryer (should I invest in one?), I baked them in the oven. They tasted just as I remembered, and despite being an adult, I burned my mouth on the first one. My son devoured them, likely because they were a novelty to him.
Nutritional Value? Surprisingly, they contain 5 grams of protein and just 3 grams of sugar per serving.
Taste Verdict? A mix of nostalgia and cardboard.
Hot Pockets Premium Pepperoni Pizza with Reduced Fat Mozzarella in a Seasoned Garlic Buttery Crust
That’s quite a mouthful, Hot Pockets! As comedian Jim Gaffigan puts it, “I’ve never eaten a Hot Pocket and thought, ‘I’m glad I ate that.’” This particular Hot Pocket didn’t remind me of pizza, but my son rated it an 8 out of 10. (And yes, I promise he eats fruits and veggies—though I braced for him to say, “I’m helping my mom with pizza snacks” at his last checkup.)
Nutritional Value? Not much to note here.
Taste Verdict? If I were starving, I’d grab these.
Annie’s Cheese Pizza Shells with Hidden Vegetables
As a fan of both mac and cheese and pizza, my son was intrigued. He said, “It’s good if you’re looking for a quick snack.” Personally, it tasted like someone mixed canned tomatoes into frozen mac and cheese.
Nutritional Value? It contains some hidden veggies!
Taste Verdict? Not as good as real pizza or even boxed mac and cheese—acceptable, but not great.
Baozza
Baozza? More like Wow-za! These innovative snacks are microwaveable bao (steamed Asian dumplings) filled with pizza ingredients. It sounds odd, but it works beautifully. My son exclaimed, “These are amazing. Ten out of ten. Can we get more?” We tried the Margherita and Cheesy Spinach flavors, but they also offer BBQ Chicken, Italian Sausage, and Pepperoni.
Nutritional Value? Not exactly health food.
Taste Verdict? I’d like to thank the inventor of these delicious bites.
Pizza Flavored Pringles
Next up are Pizza Flavored Pringles. “Holy crap, these are good,” my son stated. Although they don’t taste exactly like pizza, they deliver that signature Pringles crunch, and we had to hide the can to avoid devouring them all.
Nutritional Value? They’re surprisingly low in sodium at 180 mg (8% of daily intake).
Taste Verdict? Irresistibly engineered to taste great.
Goldfish Flavor Blasted Xtra Cheesy Pizza
I feel like “flavor blasted” and “Xtra Cheesy” might be overselling these. They taste like regular Goldfish, just a bit more flavorful. My son thought they were “fine.”
Nutritional Value? A serving is a generous 51 pieces at only 140 calories.
Taste Verdict? Like a friend request from someone you vaguely remember.
Combos Pizzeria Baked Pretzels
I generally enjoy stuffed pretzels (Trader Joe’s peanut butter-filled pretzels are a favorite). I offered these to my son and his friend, who turned them down, suggesting, “You should make homemade pizza for pizza flavor.” My son thought they were good but didn’t ask for more, leaving me to finish the rest (score!).
Nutritional Value? Not much to redeem here, except they’re low in fat.
Taste Verdict? Salty.
