I am a mom perpetually in motion. From the moment I awaken each morning until I finally rest my head at night, I am always on the go. The to-do lists stretch endlessly, filled with tasks that seem never to reach completion.
Awaken the kids, feed them breakfast, and grab a cup of coffee for myself—if I can find a moment to breathe.
“Quickly now, we can’t be late!”
“Where are your shoes? Where’s your backpack? And why on earth don’t you want to wear a jacket?”
Hurry, hurry! There’s no time to waste! Multitasking is essential; it’s the only way to tackle everything on my plate. Focus here, then there, everywhere, and nowhere.
I sip more coffee, power on the computer, and dive into work, all while keeping an eye on the clock. The rush continues. Pick up one child, then the next; check backpacks and sign agendas. I help with homework, wondering if it was always this challenging when I was young. Thankfully, my teenage daughter can assist her little brother with math—ah, the joys of Common Core! Remember when 2×2 was simply 4?
We keep moving, an endless whirlwind of activity. “Eat your dinner—just a few bites.” As they munch, I’m loading the dishwasher, sweeping the floor, and wiping down counters. The motion never ceases.
“Can you please put your backpack away? Find your shoes to make tomorrow morning easier. What do you mean you don’t know where they are?”
My daughter has dance class, my son has karate—everyone rushes to the car, and we’re off once again.
After dropping one child off, it’s a race to the next destination. While they’re occupied, I tackle errands. Where is that grocery list? Finally, I pick up the first child, then the second, and we’re back home.
“Yes, you do need a shower. Yes, it’s essential to wash your hair!”
“Hurry up—your sister can’t wait to get in the bathroom!”
“Need a snack? All right, I’m tucking you in now!”
The day’s noise begins to fade, and I’m running low on energy, but the day is far from over! I check on the laundry, empty the dishwasher, and ensure we have enough milk. Don’t forget to set the coffee pot for tomorrow!
Even as I lay down at night, my mind races with thoughts of tomorrow’s tasks, adding to the top of the list all the things left undone from today. There’s always tomorrow.
