Mickey Mouse is set to bring back the joy of hugging! Disney has revealed that ‘character greetings’ will gradually return to its parks and cruises. After a two-year hiatus from fan interactions, beloved Disney characters can once again embrace, sign autographs, and snap selfies with guests. As announced on the Walt Disney World Resort blog, this revival will commence on April 18 at Disneyland, Walt Disney World Resorts, and the Disney Cruise Line. “That’s right! Soon, you’ll have the chance to hug Mickey Mouse, snag an autograph from Mulan, and share a laugh with Goofy,” the announcement reads, brimming with excitement. “We know how much you’ve missed these magical moments, and your Disney pals have missed you too!”
To celebrate the announcement, a heartwarming montage showcasing children meeting their favorite characters was shared, sure to melt even the toughest hearts. Like many, Disney parks felt the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, closing in spring 2020 and reopening in July of that year. The company has faced significant layoffs and numerous safety measures—some of which received criticism for being insufficient. Since last fall, characters have been back but only able to interact from a distance.
This announcement comes as various organizations, from schools to workplaces, ease COVID restrictions amid lower infection rates following the Omicron surge. However, the company did not outline any plans for how character greetings will adapt in the event of future COVID variants or outbreaks. This spring marks the 50th Anniversary of Walt Disney World, which will also see the return of other fan-favorite experiences that were paused during the pandemic, including “World of Color,” “Disneyland Forever,” “Fantasmic!” and the “Main Street Electrical Parade.”
