In recent months, a troubling surge in aggressive behavior among airline passengers has been noted, with reports indicating that unruly conduct has skyrocketed. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has received over 1,300 complaints about disorderly passengers since February—more than the total for the past decade combined.
As highlighted by major news outlets, four individuals now face civil penalties totaling around $70,000 for a range of incidents, including altercations with flight attendants, refusal to wear masks, and throwing objects at airline staff. The FAA has expressed deep concern over what it describes as a “disturbing increase” in passengers disregarding the federally mandated mask requirement necessary for air travel. FAA Administrator David Thompson emphasized on social media, “We will not tolerate interference with flight crew members and their critical safety duties.”
Numerous incidents have made headlines, such as a brawl in Fort Lauderdale over mask compliance and a passenger being removed from a flight in Washington, D.C. Additionally, Alaska Airlines recently banned a state senator for failing to adhere to mask rules.
The FAA has adopted a strict “zero-tolerance” approach to passenger behavior, warning that offenders may face criminal charges, fines up to $35,000, or even lifetime bans from certain airlines. For context, the FAA recorded just 142 enforcement actions related to passenger behavior in 2019, and only 91 in 2017, illustrating the severity of the current situation.
Angela Hagedorn, a former flight attendant, shared her frustrations on social media after resigning, stating, “It has been exhausting for employees simply trying to enforce their company’s policies amid constant conflict with passengers.”
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) implemented a nationwide mask requirement on February 1, initially set to expire on May 11. TSA Senior Official Darby LaJoye stated that the mask mandate aims to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 on public transportation, emphasizing the importance of adherence as vaccination rates rise.
Sara Nelson, president of the Flight Attendants Union, reported increasingly alarming incidents, including physical assaults against crew members and even a passenger urinating on board. Such behaviors highlight the challenges faced by airline staff during these turbulent times.
