In a heartwarming display of maternal instinct, a mama duck in Minnesota has taken on the incredible task of caring for 76 ducklings, proving that parenting can come in all shapes and sizes. If you’ve ever struggled to get your children to listen and follow directions, take a lesson from this remarkable bird. Wildlife photographer Jake Anderson captured this enchanting scene on Lake Bemidji, and the world can’t get enough of this delightful family.
Just look at those fluffy little ducklings, patiently trailing behind their mom! One can only imagine her thoughts as she navigates this small army, likely murmuring, “Stay in line, or else!”
Anderson shared his experience with The New York Times, recalling how he first noticed the mother, an adult common merganser, at the end of June. “I was blown away,” he remarked. “I had no idea a duck could look after so many chicks.” It’s safe to say this mama is probably pondering that very question herself!
Interestingly, not all 76 ducklings belong to her. According to the National Audubon Society, ducks often lay eggs in other nests, which acts as a sort of reproductive “safety net” in case their own nest is compromised. Furthermore, if a duckling loses its mother, it instinctively follows another hen, leading to this large gathering of little ones.
Regardless of their origins, this mama duck is stepping up to the plate, nurturing them until they are ready to fend for themselves, which will likely take a few more weeks. Anderson noted, “I took about 50 shots, hoping one would come out clear because the waves were so strong that keeping them in focus was a challenge. Thankfully, I managed to get one decent photo.”
Originally, there were about 50 ducklings trailing behind this mama, but when Anderson checked back a few days later, the count had increased to 76. After all, when you’re looking after a gaggle, what’s a few more?
Anderson has kept fans updated on this incredible family over the past weeks, and the public is absolutely enamored. He’s even been able to track their movements through local reports in Bemidji.
This is truly a prime example of “it takes a village.” Here’s hoping this dedicated mama gets some well-deserved rest once her kids finally leave the nest.
