In the early hours of Saturday, a significant fire erupted at Pier 45, a landmark at San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf. Over 125 firefighters were dispatched to combat the four-alarm inferno, which threatened the historic tourist areas of the pier. According to the San Francisco Fire Department, approximately 25% of the pier has been consumed by flames, but fortunately, all individuals were evacuated with no injuries reported.
The fire department has been providing live updates through social media, noting that the blaze led to a partial collapse of a building at the southern end of the pier and spread to two additional structures, with the risk of extending to a third. Pier 45 is not only a working fishing pier but also features attractions like World War II vessels and an antique arcade museum, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.
Thanks to the firefighters’ efforts, the historic SS Jeremiah O’Brien Liberty ship, one of the last two operational Liberty ships from World War II, was spared from damage. Lt. Jonathan Baxter reported that the situation escalated rapidly, transitioning from a one-alarm to a four-alarm fire.
Flames were first observed around 4:15 a.m., prompting multiple emergency calls. The fire originated in a warehouse area not typically associated with tourism, positioned behind popular spots such as Fisherman’s Grotto and Alioto’s Restaurant. Lt. Baxter confirmed a section of a wall at a cement warehouse collapsed, but thankfully, there were no casualties. Firefighters were able to reposition their equipment to continue battling the fire.
Javier Martinez, a driver for Oceanic Seafood, was at the wharf to deliver fresh fish and noted that the warehouse destroyed contained essential equipment for seafood processing operations on Pier 45. “It had vehicles for distribution, both large and small,” he mentioned. Fortunately, most restaurants and historical sites remained untouched, thanks to the swift intervention of the firefighters. Reports suggest that the fire likely started within the warehouse, and an investigation is currently underway.
