In the wake of a pandemic that has significantly impacted working women, LinkedIn is finally allowing users to more accurately represent their career histories. Many dedicated parents and caregivers have long sought more inclusive options to reflect their time away from the workforce, and the platform is responding with new titles, including “stay-at-home mom” and other caregiving roles.

The shift comes after a year that has seen a staggering 2.3 million women exit the workforce, largely due to school closures and the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on industries predominantly employing women. As highlighted in a recent Forbes article, LinkedIn’s previous lack of suitable profile options has been a barrier for those wishing to return to work.

Heather Johnson, in a compelling Medium post titled “How a Simple Platform Fix Can Help Millions of Women Trying to Re-enter the Workforce,” pointed out that LinkedIn’s past offerings didn’t account for various important life events, like maternity leave, parental leave, or even time taken for caregiving. “I’m left feeling disheartened and wondering why it is still necessary, in 2021, to manipulate a global platform like LinkedIn for something as common as maternity leave,” she noted.

LinkedIn’s new changes aim to normalize employment gaps and foster better hiring conversations. These updates include a new section for employment gaps on users’ resumes, allowing them to select from ten different types of breaks, such as “family leave” or “hospital leave.” Additionally, a dedicated field has been introduced for users to add their gender pronouns, responding to user requests for more inclusivity.
