In the midst of the chaos and uncertainty that surrounds us, Sarah Hudson embraces her role as a mom without pretending to have all the answers. In a world filled with confusion over health guidelines and political debates, she is determined to spread a little positivity.
“The school year begins in bits and pieces, but today marks the real start for my family—we are officially back. Three out of three masked, two out of three vaccinated (hoping soon for those under 11), everyone is excited, apprehensive, courageous, vulnerable, and—at least as far as I can tell—smiling beneath the masks. Huge thanks to the teachers, administrators, and all school staff for carrying the weight of emotions from the past year and a half—both from the kids and parents. Thank you to science for bringing us this far and closer to health and freedom. I’m grateful for fellow moms, our shared humor, and the sun that rises every day, regardless of the circumstances. And please, let us be held in your care,” she shared as she sent her three children off to in-person classes.
Once part of a well-known Hollywood couple, Hudson has channeled her celebrity status into meaningful work. Her advocacy for children’s rights through organizations like Save the Children highlights her commitment to supporting those in need—children who lack access to healthy food, clothing, and educational materials. She also co-founded the company, Once Upon a Farm, which has initiated its Million Meals campaign, aiming to provide one million meals to underprivileged children in the U.S. by 2024. This effort kicked off with a special flavor pouch, Farmer Sarah’s Pumpkin Oatmeal Cookie, featuring organic pumpkin, banana, oats, and coconut milk.
“From the very beginning, I understood that my desire to co-found this business was rooted in wanting to contribute to a cause that aligns with Save the Children’s mission. I had no idea how deeply passionate and purpose-driven our team would be. It’s been an incredible journey,” she reflects.
Although Hudson recently signed a production deal with Netflix, she remains humble about her achievements. “When people call this a brand, I chuckle. This is a struggle bus. I don’t see myself as a brand or a powerhouse,” says the 49-year-old.
Initially hesitant to promote her charitable endeavors, she worried it might come off as self-serving. However, her mentor at Save the Children encouraged her to use her platform to share important stories. “I realized that part of my purpose is to tell these stories, so I had to get comfortable with sharing them,” she explains.
During our chat, Hudson occasionally hides her face, not due to any cosmetic mishaps but rather because she’s just returned from the dentist. “I’m not hiding a cavity or anything; I just had a minor procedure on this side,” she assures.
Hudson aims to convey the message that even celebrities aren’t perfect, a lesson she hopes to instill in her children—Ella, 15, Mia, 12, and Jack, 9. “They witness my hard work. What’s essential to me is that they see me as a beginner, someone who is learning and willing to admit, ‘I don’t know. Can you help me?’ It’s about showing up, even when I feel frustrated with my own learning process,” she shares.
Unlike many celebrity moms, Hudson doesn’t view her children as friends. To her, there’s a significant difference between enjoying a movie night with them or having them sample her new Once Upon a Farm pouches and considering them her peers. “I have plenty of friends, and I don’t need my kids to be my friends. They should focus on their own growth,” she asserts. “I cherish our time together and love the adventures we go on, but I don’t want them to feel pressured to be my best friends.”
Her life is chaotic enough as it is. “I have three kids in three different schools, and it’s a whirlwind. There are constant forms to fill out, emails to respond to, and COVID-related updates. People often think I’m Type A because of the characters I’ve played, but I’m not. I tend to scramble and sometimes overcompensate because I’m trying so hard to keep up,” she admits.
