“I can only share my own experience, but aging can be extremely stressful, especially when you’re constantly compared to your much younger self,” Lane stated in an interview with New Beauty. She originally joined the cast at the age of 33. “In a normal life, I would feel fantastic; I’m healthy and strong, plus I have a lively 3-year-old to keep me on my toes. But being on television means every aspect of my appearance is scrutinized,” she explained. Lane reflected on how she often looks back and thinks, “I looked great then,” although she acknowledges that such thoughts are rarely felt in the moment.

Lane also mentioned that comparisons with her co-star, Sarah Jane, have affected her self-perception. “I became well-known during a time when magazines dominated the media, and there were constant articles labeling me as ‘curvy’,” she shared. “That was tough, and no amount of working out changed the way those articles portrayed me.” It’s easy to see how the tabloid culture of the early 2000s made it difficult for anyone in the spotlight. “They loved to stack me against Sarah Jane, who, no matter what, was always going to be very petite,” she added.

Fortunately, Lane has found ways to stay grounded while filming And Just Like That. She surrounds herself with calming influences, such as the show’s creator, Michael Patrick. “Michael is incredibly calm and reassuring. He emphasizes that none of us can look like we did back then. Bella’s style remains intact, but at 55, we’re addressing the realities of aging in the storyline,” she explained. “There are positives to getting older, like wisdom and life experiences, but there are also stressful aspects.”

Lane believes that discussions around aging and self-image are part of a larger cultural conversation. “I like to think there’s more to life than just our appearance, but in our society—especially for women—how we look is often at the forefront. It’s a complex cultural issue that needs addressing, but it’s challenging right now.”
