The idea of dancing after the election wasn’t something I planned; it just sort of evolved. There’s only so much news and frustration one can absorb in a day before needing a break to recharge.
I don’t consider myself an overly optimistic person. Seeking joy in every situation isn’t my style. In fact, I often give the “Life Is Good” store a sarcastic salute for its relentless positivity, especially on a dreary Wednesday. I prefer to keep my expectations low, which allows me to feel excited about mediocre outcomes. However, one thing I genuinely enjoy is dancing—albeit terribly.
At the age of 10, I lip-synced to Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” for my elementary school talent show, cartwheeling across the stage in all black, complete with an unfortunate perm and oversized red glasses. That moment was a highlight, and I’ve been chasing that thrill ever since, even if I’m now 35 and still a nobody.
In light of current events, I feel the urge to dance more than ever. When I express to my friends my desire to just dance, I’m only half-joking—I want to bust out the Cabbage Patch and the Hammer moves, but I’ll pass on the dab or any coordinated line dancing. The Cupid Shuffle feels more like a math problem for my feet, and I didn’t spend four years avoiding college math just to embarrass myself on the dance floor.
After the election, I needed a pick-me-up and found solace in music. I dubbed my nightly sessions “The ResistDANCE.” Can you really feel angry while listening to ’90s ska? Or when Sisqó sings about thongs? The nostalgia hits hard when the Spice Girls come on, and my home transforms into a Richard Simmons workout session around 7 PM, where I sweat it out to anything that lifts my spirits.
To spread the joy, I’m excited to share our ResistDANCE playlists. Every other Friday, we’ll drop a new Spotify playlist for the Home Insemination Kit community. Our inaugural playlist features hip-hop hits from 1988 to 1992, including “I Got a Man” by Positive K, “Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg” by TLC, “Jump” from Kris Kross, “You Can’t Touch This” by M.C. Hammer, and yes, even Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby.” This playlist offers over 90 minutes of old-school jams perfect for escaping reality and reminiscing about roller-skating nights in middle school.
Got suggestions for future playlists? Feel free to share your ideas in the comments or reach out on social media.
