In a heartfelt conversation, actress Jean Smart opened up about her experiences as a widow and a working mom in an interview with USA Today. The star of HBO’s Hacks shared insights into the challenges she faced while filming the show’s second season following the unexpected passing of her husband, Richard Gilliland, in March 2021. At 70, Smart remains an active presence in the entertainment industry, with roles in acclaimed series like Watchmen and Mare of Easttown, both of which have received Emmy nominations.

During the interview, Smart reminisced about her Emmy win for Hacks, recalling her anxiety about a tribute to her late husband during the ceremony. “I was kind of a nervous wreck most of the evening,” she said, expressing concern for their youngest son, who was with her at the event. Fortunately, Gilliland was honored in the memorial segment, easing some of Smart’s worries.

Her son, 13-year-old Forrest, joined her at the premiere, and when asked if he watches her shows, she noted that he has recently started to take an interest. “There’s definitely some stuff that’s off limits,” she explained, adding that many kids prefer not to see their parents in different roles. However, she eventually allowed him to watch some episodes, and he finished the first season just in time for the new season’s launch.

When discussing how filming after her husband’s death felt, Smart admitted it was both difficult and healing. “It was a very difficult season compared to the first because Dad wasn’t at home running the ship,” she shared. The added responsibilities of single parenthood weighed heavily on her, with worries about Forrest’s daily needs constantly on her mind. “I had no idea how hard single mothers have it,” she reflected, acknowledging that even with her resources, it remains a challenge.

Additionally, Smart has an older son, Conor, 32, who prefers to stay out of the public eye. Fans can catch the new season of Hacks every Tuesday on HBO.
