Although I was too young to catch it during its initial release, I never imagined a film centered around sharks could be so compelling until I finally viewed it as an adult. The narrative is exceptional, the shark is truly menacing, and the film keeps viewers in suspense. Until now, my viewing experience has been limited to my living room couch. However, in celebration of its 40th anniversary, ‘Jaws’ is slated for a limited theatrical run starting June 21.

While watching movies at home is certainly convenient—especially with the affordable popcorn from my kitchen—some films, like ‘Jaws’, truly lose their impact when viewed on a small screen. Numerous other films deserve a revival in theaters—some for my generation and some for the next. Excluding iconic classics like ‘Gone with the Wind’, ‘Singin’ in the Rain’, and ‘The Wizard of Oz’, there are many gems from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s that I would love to see on the big screen. Here are my top 10 picks:

  1. The Godfather (Parts I and II)
We’ll skip Part III for good reason. These films redefine gangster cinema and have earned their place as Oscar winners for Best Picture. Set against the backdrop of 1940s New York City, the Italian countryside, and revolutionary Cuba, this family saga illustrates how a young man striving for a respectable life can become entrenched in his family’s empire. With countless unforgettable moments, both films are worthy of a grand viewing experience—perhaps even as a double feature.
  2. Grease
From “Greased Lightning” to “You’re the One That I Want,” this musical is best experienced on a large screen. Despite my reservations about the film’s moral, where Sandy conforms to win Danny’s affection, the infectious energy and catchy tunes make it an ideal group viewing—where everyone can’t help but sing along and tap their feet.
  3. The Princess Bride
This film is celebrated for its witty dialogue and captivating visuals. It’s a must-see for the epic sword-fighting scene between Westley and Inigo Montoya, along with memorable moments like the Rodents of Unusual Size and Princess Buttercup’s dramatic tumble down the hill.
  4. Gremlins
I must confess: I’ve never seen this classic! It’s a bit embarrassing. While I enjoyed its sequel, ‘Gremlins 2: The New Batch’, I’m eagerly awaiting a revival of the original. I just need to check if it’s too frightening for the kids first.
  5. Planet of the Apes (the original)
Forget the remakes; the original holds a unique power. Although it may appear dated, the jaw-dropping ending left me in awe when I first saw it as a child. The makeup effects were remarkable for their time, and the storyline remains surprisingly believable. I’d love to share this experience with my son.
  6. The Shining
Though I’m not a fan of horror films, Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece is a visual feast. There’s no substitute for the chilling experience of seeing Jack Nicholson on the big screen amidst the eerie atmosphere, including iconic scenes like the blood pouring from the elevator and the haunting twins in the hallway. Definitely a no-kids zone.
  7. Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure
This is a family-friendly classic that deserves a big-screen revival. The vibrant colors, the whimsical bike ride through Hollywood, and the unforgettable breakfast scene are best enjoyed with an audience—don’t forget about Large Marge!
  8. Big
Another family favorite! We’ve been meaning to show this one to our kids, especially the iconic piano dance scene. Watching it in a theater would enhance the experience, allowing everyone to disconnect from distractions and truly enjoy the film.
  9. Do The Right Thing
The discussions around this film are endless, particularly regarding its poignant conclusion. The vivid cinematography, set on the hottest day of summer, immerses viewers in the palpable tension and heat. A small screen simply can’t capture its essence.
  10. Back to the Future
This one’s a no-brainer! The question is whether it’s for the kids or for my own nostalgia.

In conclusion, the cinematic experience is something special, and many films deserve to be experienced on the big screen rather than relegated to our living rooms. Whether it’s the thrills of ‘Jaws’ or the nostalgia of ‘Back to the Future’, these films have the power to connect us and create lasting memories.
