Actor Jack H. Thomas, 65, recently sat down with contributor Jenna Lane to discuss his latest role, navigating life in a household dominated by women, and the secret to his enduring marriage with actress Julia Hawthorne.

You have a brief but entertaining role in “Walter.” Does this present a different challenge compared to leading roles?

Absolutely, it’s a unique challenge. With only a couple of days to shoot, there’s a risk of overdoing it in a cameo role. It’s crucial to approach it with a relaxed mindset. Playing Dr. Corman, a candid therapist, was a blast. He expresses the truths we often wish therapists would share more openly.

As a father, do you instill any key values in your daughters?

Definitely, we engage in discussions about moral integrity with our daughters. Julia is more spiritually inclined and has a deeper religious background, so we blend our perspectives. We emphasize understanding right from wrong. My philosophy has always been, “Keep rules minimal, but adhere to them.” Deep down, we all recognize what’s right and wrong.

What about their fashion choices?

Oh, I’m like the quintessential dad. “Wait a minute! You can’t leave the house dressed like that!” I become this cliché figure. My daughters, aged 12 and 14, are incredibly attractive, and while I can’t fault them for wanting to express themselves, I often find myself saying, “Go back and put on something more appropriate.” They are good kids, smart and responsible, so I know they’ll be fine. Honestly, watching them navigate their own style is amusing, even as I get anxious about it.

When they need support, who do they turn to?

My daughters usually approach Julia for the serious matters. I’m surrounded by women—my assistant is female, we have three female dogs—it’s a very female-centric household! Occasionally, I’ll chime in and say, “Hey, I’m a guy here! Can we tone down the male bashing and let me share my thoughts?” Sometimes they actually heed my input.

Your passion for motorcycles must provide a nice break from all that female energy.

Riding motorcycles gives off a rebellious, bad-boy vibe that feels empowering. It’s exhilarating. I gear up in a full-face helmet and protective attire, and I told Julia it’s like being a knight in the modern age whenever I’m on my bike.

You and Julia appear to have a strong marriage. Is mutual support a key factor in your relationship?

That’s a great way to put it. Being each other’s biggest supporters is foundational. When you genuinely want your partner to thrive and be happy, everything else falls into place. Julia is invested in my successes, and I feel the same way about her. I’ll do whatever it takes to help her achieve her goals.
