As we reflect on 2016, a year filled with turmoil and challenges, the collective sentiment has often been one of disdain. “What a chaotic year!” “I can’t wait for 2017!” “2016 was a complete disaster!” These phrases echo through conversations, social media, and news outlets, painting a bleak picture of the past twelve months.
However, for me personally, 2016 was a transformative year. I left my conventional job and embarked on an entrepreneurial journey that ignited my passion. While the transition came with its share of stress and frustration, it has mostly fostered significant personal growth. I discovered new strengths and capabilities, which I intend to build upon in the coming year.
I also had the opportunity to spend valuable time with my children, particularly in the first half of the year. This was a special time to savor moments with my youngest child at home. For the first time, I enjoyed all holidays and weekends off, allowing for a deeper connection with my family. Additionally, I trained for and successfully completed two triathlons. With a teenager now capable of babysitting, my husband and I have savored newfound time together.
Yet, on a broader scale, 2016 was riddled with significant global strife. The divisive U.S. election stands out as a particularly chaotic event, with many agreeing it was one of the most contentious in history. From Brexit to the Zika virus, and from racial injustice to the crisis in Aleppo, the year was marked by turbulence. The losses of iconic figures like Gene Wilder, Carrie Fisher, and George Michael only added to the sorrow.
Moreover, 2016 saw an unsettling resurgence of racism and misogyny. Many people turned a blind eye to hateful speech, resulting in an alarming level of acceptance for bigotry. This negativity permeated our social media feeds, prompting many to unfollow friends and further entrench our echo chambers of opinion.
The prevailing sentiment for 2017 seems to be: “Let’s not discuss 2016.” However, I argue that this approach may lead to further issues. Philosopher George Santayana once stated, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Rather than dismissing 2016, we should extract and embrace the lessons it has imparted, using them to guide our resolutions for the new year.
What 2016 has taught me:
- Divisions Widen with Silence: A divided nation risks becoming further fragmented if we continue to ignore differing perspectives. So, in 2017, I commit to engaging more openly with those who hold opposing views. My resolution is to foster dialogue and truly listen rather than merely waiting for my turn to speak. If we, as citizens, cannot find common ground, how can we expect our leaders to do so? Change must begin at the grassroots level.
- Awareness of Global Suffering: This year has illuminated the struggles faced by countless individuals near and far. I recognize how fortunate I am. Therefore, in 2017, my goal is to be more charitable and instill this value in my children. I want to model generosity by donating time, resources, and my skills to causes that matter. While one person cannot change the world, collective action can lead to meaningful progress.
- Confronting Prejudice: The persistence of racism, hatred, and bigotry is evident. In 2017, I will actively oppose these injustices and raise my children to do the same. I will empower my daughters to be strong, intelligent, and independent, assuring them they can achieve anything they set their minds to. Most importantly, I will teach them the importance of empathy and advocacy for the disadvantaged. By nurturing thoughtful and compassionate attitudes, we can prepare the next generation to create a better world.
In times of adversity, great change can emerge. Let’s view 2016 as a wake-up call, setting the stage for a remarkable 2017.
