In a fascinating development in culinary creativity, a clever individual has discovered a way to craft wine using an Instant Pot. While he may not be in line for a prestigious award, his ingenuity certainly deserves recognition.
Food enthusiast Mark Thompson recently detailed his wine-making process on his blog. “We’ve all seen those amusing posts online wishing that someone could simply throw grapes into a pot and create wine,” Thompson remarked. “Well, here I am, and I’m all about that! I adore sharing unique ideas.”
Thompson’s method requires an Instant Pot along with grape juice, wine yeast, sugar, a funnel, and some clear packing tape. It may sound oddly reminiscent of a college experience, but the results are worth the effort. He provides a comprehensive guide that involves mixing the grape juice and yeast, adjusting the Instant Pot to the yogurt function, and leaving the vent open on the lid. The process is more detailed than this brief overview suggests, but with Thompson’s clear instructions, you’ll be on your way to producing red wine.
“Patience is essential,” Thompson cautions. “The entire process lasts about 48 hours!” While my own Instant Pot was purchased for quick meals, I might just make an exception for this winemaking adventure.
He shares a glimpse of what the wine looks like midway through fermentation, noting, “It’ll taste quite fizzy and somewhat carbonated.” He humorously mentions that he couldn’t resist taking a sip, describing it as a bit unpleasant but not entirely awful. After an additional 24 hours of fermentation, more venting, and a bit of bottling, the wine is ready for its final resting place. “Store the bottle in a dark area, away from light. I kept mine behind the Instant Pot beneath my cabinets,” Thompson suggested.
Thompson, who had never attempted anything like this before, explained that any juice can be used as long as it’s free from preservatives, broadening the flavor possibilities. After a waiting period of eight days to a month, your homemade wine will be complete. Surprisingly, he found it to be significantly better than many inexpensive store-bought options, even exceeding the quality of the famed 2 Buck Chuck.
In light of recent recalls affecting Instant Pots, this winemaking innovation may just be the silver lining many have needed. “It’s perfect for summer gatherings when you want to whip up wine spritzers or a refreshing sangria,” he adds.
