It’s hard to believe that we lost the legendary Prince nearly six years ago on April 21, 2016. Since his tragic passing, fans have been fortunate to gain new insights into his life through three posthumous albums and an autobiography. Recently, an astonishing piece of footage surfaced, featuring an 11-year-old Prince Nelson, affectionately known as “Skipper,” being interviewed during a teachers’ strike in 1970.
The team at CBS 4 WCCO in Minnesota began sifting through their archives to locate footage related to a recent teachers’ strike in the Minneapolis Public Schools. While searching, producer Matt Liddy stumbled upon a clip of a young boy being interviewed and was stunned to realize it was a young Prince. He shared the video with his colleagues, who quickly recognized the iconic musician.
In the clip, the interviewer asks young Prince if the other kids support the teachers’ strike. He responds with a confident, “Yup,” and adds, “I think they should get a better education too cause, um, and I think they should get some more money cause they work, they be working extra hours for us and all that stuff.”
The CBS 4 team verified the footage’s authenticity with local historian and Prince enthusiast, Lily Johnson, who confirmed that the clip was indeed filmed when Prince was 11 years old. They also reached out to his childhood friend, Greg Thompson, a member of Prince’s first band, who affirmed his identity.
While the video doesn’t showcase any of Prince’s musical talents, it highlights his strong connection to his community and his support for local educators. “Seeing Prince as a young child in his neighborhood school really grounds him to that Minneapolis connection,” Johnson noted. “These glimpses into what Minneapolis meant to him help us understand the profound bond he had with his hometown.”
