Inane Questions Expecting Moms Over 40 Encounter

When I was 42, a well-meaning acquaintance asked if the specialist I was seeing had approved my plans for pregnancy. “But I thought you were 35! You’re older than that?” she continued, clearly shocked.

“Yes, indeed! If Halle Berry can become a mother at 46, then surely I can manage a little one at my age,” I replied, perhaps a bit too enthusiastically.

During my pregnancy, which came a decade after my first child was born, I received numerous positive comments and supportive inquiries. However, I also faced my share of awkward, intrusive, and downright silly questions. My typical response was a polite smile and nod, followed by an exaggerated gesture of checking my phone for a nonexistent call to escape further quizzing.

I hadn’t initially planned to conceive at 42, but I chose to embrace the journey anyway. The thought of not welcoming another child into our home felt far more daunting. Yet, many people seemed uninterested in my thoughtful decision-making process, preferring to ask questions that reflected their own concerns rather than my reality. Here are some of the more ridiculous inquiries I encountered—and how I might have responded differently.

How did this happen?

Well, just like you were conceived—over a bottle of wine and some good old-fashioned fun. Classic methods never go out of style!

You got pregnant without fertility treatments?

This was a surprisingly common question, often asked by medical staff and even strangers who noticed the “ADVANCED MATERNAL AGE” label on my file. Frankly, this is private information that only my healthcare provider needs to know. So, let’s skip the prying and focus on how fabulous I am instead!

Are you more exhausted than you were in your 30s?

Absolutely! That was the case even before pregnancy hit, with my bedtime shifting to 2:30 PM. Despite the fatigue, I’m also wiser, more confident, and in a much better relationship. Sure, sleep deprivation hits harder than it did at 32, but thankfully, it’s not as tough as it would be at 52. And thank goodness for the pour-over coffee trend!

This must be your last child, right?

Maybe. Who knows? But thanks for your concern, MOM! I understand you’re worried about my aging body, but let’s keep those thoughts to yourself until I can make that deeply personal decision with my partner.

You’ll be HOW OLD when she’s in college?

This is my second child, and I fully support her skipping college altogether to embrace a free-spirited life selling pottery in Punta Cana. Age is just a number, right?

Are you planning to get married?

The beauty of choosing to have a child outside of marriage at this stage is that the answer is a simple “nope.”

What does your mother think?

She thinks I should reconsider this entire endeavor. Just kidding! She’s actually thrilled to welcome another grandchild and can’t wait to sing “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes” on repeat.

You know things have changed since your last baby, right?

Absolutely! Electricity exists now, and we have way cooler gadgets. However, parenting remains fundamentally the same at its core. Thanks for your passive-aggressive concern, though; I’ll add it to my collection of outdated parenting manuals!

Are you worried people will mistake you for her grandmother?

Honestly, I’d rather be seen as her sister, guiding her through life’s adventures. If people want to think I’m her grandma, they can go ahead and tip off tabloids about the oldest nursing mother. I’d read that headline!

Wow. Amazing?

Yes! It is wonderful news! I’m cultivating a new life inside me. In honor of this miracle, please raise a glass and send good vibes my way—but save the name suggestions for my child.
