In Search of Parenting Clarity Amid Uncertainty

We’ve all witnessed parents attributing various infant behaviors to teething, from excessive drooling to restless nights. However, a recent article in Slate reveals that teething typically results in only mild symptoms, suggesting it might not be the source of our worries after all.

As a parent navigating the sleepless nights filled with crying and comforting, I often found myself yearning for a remedy to ease my child’s discomfort, as well as a way to make sense of our experiences. Teething became a convenient scapegoat for what could be an unanswerable dilemma.

With over fifteen years of parenting experience under my belt, I’m still on the lookout for explanations and solutions to countless irritations. If my child complains of a stomachache, I can’t help but spiral into thoughts of appendicitis, instead of considering that perhaps she’s just anxious about the math test looming over her.

When my 12-year-old son exhibits mood swings, my instinct is to hand him an apple, presuming he’s simply hungry, rather than accepting that occasional moodiness might just be part of being twelve. My 15-year-old may have outgrown drooling, but he often stays up late and can be quite irritable. Is it his wisdom teeth causing discomfort? Is he stressed about his friends? Or is it simply the hormonal changes that come with adolescence? Should I have a heart-to-heart with him, offer him some pain relief, or just give him a hug?

In the middle of the night, I find myself as a mother in search of explanations. One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is that there often aren’t easy answers. My daughter may be experiencing test anxiety, dealing with a stomach issue, or just putting off bedtime. My tween could be hungry, fatigued, or simply navigating his own personality quirks—no amount of apples can remedy that.

As for my teenager, he might be up late texting, engrossed in comic books, or involved in activities I’d rather not ponder. His wisdom teeth might be coming in, he could be feeling the weight of high school pressures, or he might be grappling with some emotional pain. Like infants, teens often communicate non-verbally, particularly when they’re frustrated, so I may never uncover the full story behind his late-night escapades, just as I never figured out the reason behind three months of drooling.

Parenting is rife with uncertainties, and identifying any part of it can make us feel more competent. However, perhaps the true wisdom lies in accepting that not every challenge can be resolved or every discomfort soothed.

Summary

The journey of parenting is filled with uncertainties. Parents often seek straightforward answers to their children’s behaviors and challenges, but the reality is that many issues lack clear solutions. Accepting this ambiguity may be the key to navigating the complexities of raising children.
