Last week, while driving my kids around town, I stumbled upon a radio station playing Christmas tunes. At first, I was taken aback, like the moment you run into your teacher at the grocery store in sweatpants. It just felt out of place.
When I realized what I was listening to, my immediate reaction was, “Oh no! What is happening? It’s not even the holidays yet!” I felt that familiar annoyance, reminiscent of when I’m reminded at Target that it’s time for back-to-school shopping while I’m lounging by the pool. Don’t rush me, Target!
I tried to push the thought away, telling myself that the holidays were still far off. But then one afternoon, as I listened to my children argue over something trivial and read yet another disheartening news story, I thought, why not? It’s time to bring some holiday spirit into this house.
I know that decorating for the holidays this early goes against the unwritten rule of “No Christmas Before Thanksgiving.” We haven’t even thawed out our turkey yet, and it’s still pumpkin season. But this year, I really don’t care.
Sure, it feels odd to hang garlands while leaves swirl around outside in the warm sun. But honestly, I’m over the whole autumn vibe. I want bright lights, shiny ornaments, and all things festive. I want to transform my space into a winter wonderland, and luckily, I still have a decorative vase filled with last year’s ornaments and outdoor lights that never got taken down. #lazinesspaysoff
So instead of waiting for Black Friday, I’m pulling those red and green bins out of the basement today. I’ll be singing carols as I deck the halls, rewatching holiday classics like Love Actually for the umpteenth time, and chuckling at Clark Griswold’s antics in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.
I’m going to greet strangers with a cheerful “Happy Holidays!” and indulge in pine-scented candles. I might even splurge on some shiny decorations at the craft store, even if I don’t actually craft. Who knows, I might just slap some Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer decals on my old minivan.
I’m determined to find joy and spread cheer, no matter the naysayers. If you’re one of those who insists on waiting until after Thanksgiving, keep it to yourself. People who decorate early tend to be happier, and that’s a fact.
With everything going on in the world today, it’s crucial to find moments of joy wherever we can. So here’s to an extended holiday season filled with sparkle and cheer.
