There’s a saying that laughter is the best remedy, and let’s be honest—between the relentless stream of bleak news and the everyday pandemonium of family life, I could definitely use an endless supply.
When I’m in need of a cheerful pick-me-up, I might indulge in a binge-watching session of Brooklyn Nine-Nine or revisit classic episodes of Parks and Recreation. I might also dive into works by talented writers like Mindy Kaling or David Sedaris, all while indulging in a bag of chocolate-covered pretzels. Or, I’ll scroll through social media for some hilarious memes.
However, on those particularly grumpy days when I need a serious boost of joy, there’s one source that never fails: watching videos of people taking spills. It appears there are two types of individuals—those who find humor in the comical spectacle of falls, and those who are just too serious. If you’re unsure where you stand, watch a clip of someone falling and see if you don’t end up in stitches.
Now, I assure you, I’m not a bad person. In fact, most people would describe me as quite pleasant. Despite my occasional colorful language, I’m genuinely polite and deeply empathetic. I tear up during commercials for household products, for crying out loud! But when it comes to watching wipe-outs, I transform into someone who simply can’t control their laughter. It’s like when a reflex causes your leg to kick during a doctor’s appointment, but in this case, it’s uncontrollable cackling.
Of course, I always hope that no one gets hurt in these falls. I would never wish harm on anyone, but if someone is going to take a tumble, then why not get a laugh out of it?
I’m an equal-opportunity giggler, too. One night a few years back, my partner and I were checking on our kids before heading to bed. We opened the door just in time to see our youngest son wiggle right off the bed. He landed with a thud, prompting my partner to rush to his side while I burst out laughing, sprinting down the hall. “You laughed at your own child falling out of bed,” he exclaimed, incredulously.
“I know!” I managed to say between fits of giggles. “Did you see how he just flopped over?”
Even my own clumsiness is a source of amusement for me. Years ago, during a family dinner at my in-laws’, I was feeling particularly helpful and decided to clear the table. With my arms loaded with crumb-filled plates, I made a valiant leap over the dog gate meant to keep our energetic puppies contained. However, my shoe caught on the gate, and instead of a graceful vault, I tumbled like a disoriented gymnast, landing in a heap on the kitchen floor, surrounded by debris.
My partner rushed over, “Oh no! Are you okay?”
I simply rolled over, tears of laughter streaming down my cheeks, unable to speak. “I fell!” I squeaked, finding the whole scenario utterly hilarious. To this day, I can’t help but laugh at how I launched over that gate, and even my more embarrassing tumbles—like slipping on ice—still bring me joy.
At this point, you’re either nodding along or shaking your head in disbelief. Either way, I’ll leave you with a lighthearted video to brighten your day. You’re welcome!
