I Value My Friendships, Yet I Prefer Family Time Above All Else

I genuinely enjoy my family, and when it comes to spending time, they are my top priority. After all, I put significant effort into choosing my partner for this journey, and he is truly the person I cherish most in the world. I’ve also dedicated time and energy to nurturing my children into individuals I genuinely enjoy being around. We are all a work in progress, but my decision will always lean towards them.

Often, I forgo social outings with friends for family movie nights, like our beloved Project Runway Junior and popcorn sessions, which might be a bit nerdy, but they’re our tradition. Saturday mornings find me opting for family time over brunch with friends, as I just spent the week shuttling my kids around and managing their daily routines. Before they head out the door again, I want to relish every moment with them.

There are times I choose them simply because, let’s be honest, I don’t have to wear pants when I’m at home. Vacations with my family are preferred because, even in their whiniest moments, I understand them deeply. I know who is hangry, who has had too much sugar, and who just needs to toughen up. Often, that’s me! We’ve learned each other’s rhythms and quirks as if they were our own.

I select them because they embody everything I hoped for, even when I didn’t know what I was wishing for. They truly understand me—my cheerful yet obnoxious morning self, my tendency to doze off halfway through a movie, and my love for peanut butter cups. They know I’m a bit of a helicopter mom when it comes to swimming, that I dislike being cold, and that clutter makes me cranky. They are fully aware of my flaws yet continue to love me unconditionally.

I choose my family because, despite their long-winded jokes and messy faces, they bring me more joy than any concert or sophisticated film could offer. Time is fleeting—I blinked, and my son is already 10; I blinked again, and my daughter is 5. The thought of missing these moments is daunting, so I find myself propping my eyelids open with toothpicks to savor every second.

Our family can enjoy exciting activities together like traveling and skiing, but we can also simply relish lazy days piled on an air mattress with movies, books, and snacks. Those are often my favorite days. I choose them because they choose me back—at least for now. I know that once they get their driver’s licenses, their priorities will shift, and I might find myself feeling a bit emotional about that.

I choose them because they are mine. Like any family, we face challenges, but we navigate them together. So, to anyone I might miss out on social experiences with, I apologize in advance. My time with these little ones is limited, and I intend to cherish every moment before they start choosing everything else over me!
