I Aspire to Be a Bold, Spirited Senior Woman

It was a typical afternoon when my two closest friends and I, all of us just 13 years old, made a serious commitment to one another. We were perched on the rocks outside my parents’ house, feeling the weight of boredom that comes with being a teenager — too old for dolls yet too young for real adventures.

In that moment, we vowed that when life finally began (because surely, there had to be more than just being 13), we would seize every opportunity to live it fully. Our promise was to never morph into the stereotypical grandmas we often saw — donning frumpy outfits, glued to daytime TV, preparing pot roasts, and knitting away.

Instead, we envisioned a life of vibrant living. We would embrace our wild side, becoming loud and unapologetic old ladies. We would relish in our age and the freedom that came with it. No one would dare judge us or scold us for our choices; we could flip the script on anyone who told us to smile.

We’d don colorful attire, belt out Guns N’ Roses tunes in dive bars, sip whiskey without a care, and flash our aging bodies at passing cars. Late-night gaming sessions and junk food dinners would be our new normal. We’d date younger men, shocking our grandchildren, and live with abandon.

Fast forward to today, and while those youthful dreams have evolved, my friends and I often find ourselves stuck in the whirlwind of motherhood. Life has shifted from the carefree days of rock music and whiskey to the routine of bedtime struggles and navigating sassy tweens who sometimes test our patience (like catching barf with our bare hands).

Yet, during rare nights where we reconnect over drinks, we reaffirm our commitment to a future filled with zest — because surely, there has to be more than just motherhood. We dream of donning faux fur coats, indulging in the finest cannabis, and sneaking into hotel pools for midnight swims. We’ll be those fun grandmas who take the kids on thrill rides and partake in skydiving adventures.

These dreams remind us that one day, when the pressures of parenting lift, we’ll revel in a world free from judgment. No PTA members will critique us; our children will be grown, and the only things that will truly matter will be our friendships and loved ones. I’ll know I’ve done my job as a parent, and the people remaining in my life will be the ones who truly matter.

Bit by bit, my future as a spirited old woman is emerging. The older I get, the less I care about insignificant matters. With each wrinkle, I embrace freedom and authenticity.

So, if you spot me jamming out to Sweet Child O’ Mine in my SUV, with car seats in the back and my lacy bra peeking out, know that I’m simply preparing to become that carefree granny who lives life on her terms.

Let’s all aspire to be those bold, spirited seniors. It’s certainly more exciting than watching The Price is Right.
